if you double clutch it will it go in easer? if so id definately say synchros are gone. and yeah second hand box will be cheaper than a rebuild on the current one.
have you tried changing the oil mayby. may cure it for a while or at least make it easier to live with.

i had the same problem with mine, started off with not going in sometimes then never went in at all. ended up finding a second hand box for $400, heaps cheaper than a reco box, which some people ask around $1600

If you're handy enough on the tools, why not buy the bits and repair it yourself? Save your money for beer.

i dont think a gearbox rebuild is something everybody should be having a crack at. there is just so many bits in em i wouldnt even attempt without a good workshop manual

I agree, I too wouldn't attempt it without a detailed manual and tooling and it certainly isn't something just "anyone" can do with basic tools. If the box is getting replaced anyway and he's capable enough, why not? Although if it were me and I couldn't afford the downtime, I would still buy the 2nd hand box, do the swap and replace the knackered synrco in the old one, then sell it off. Gearboxes aren't as scary to rebuild as some may think.

i do agree they arnt as hard as people may think, and there is some special tools required to do the job.
but its still no grease and oil change in the drive way. even removing the box it a pita as they weigh a tonne and are awkward.
