TD42 Turbo Patrol exhaust sound....

Gday guys,
Got a TD42 with after market low mount turbo and a 3 inch straight though exhaust with no muffler......
Im wondering, many trucks ive heard have a whistle about them..... mine makes more of a " ssssshhhhhhh " sound when boosting..... I run 12 pound boost.....
My mates 80 series 4.2 after market turbo with intercooler sounds fark loads better then mine and im wondering.....
Are there any variables in the turbo system for more or less or better sounding exhaust or turbo sounds, and or does an intercooler affect exhaust noise at all????
cheers

more boost
other than that no idea. i guess turbo size, type and the works could all affect it. possibly even fuel settings.

your intake setup will make a big difference to the sound as well.
it also depends on what turbo you have.

this one sounds good, don't think its running much boost, as said, intake side would make a lot of difference.

I have (from memory) a step down from airbox: 4">3">2.5", then into the turbo, then step up from 2.25" to 2.5" from turbo to inlet manifold. Mine makes a "whoosh" type sound, as opposed to either nothing, or a very slight whistle sound from my brothers TD42T GU.
My exhaust is 3" dump, and full 3" mandrel bent, with no mufflers. My brothers is the exact same, but with a smaller (2.5" dump). His has a lot more bark to the exhaust too, whereas mine is a tad quieter and flat.

so the factory over the rocker cover filter and into a snorkel would make a large difference.....
anyway i can change my intake without losing the snorkel for any sort of noise benefit???

my denco kit on gq td42 has a whistle that is similar to a volvo prime mover.it has a 3" exhaust with no muffler.it is set at 14 lbs.it was the same at 7 lbs.

It depends what sound your after i suppose. Personally i like the noises my car makes, as you can hear it really well from inside the car, but bystanders etc. probably cant hear a thing. One thing a CAN guarantee though, is that if you were to free up your air flow into the motor, you'll gain precious power and more than likely decrease the turbo lag.
I'm not too sure how you could increase the turbo whistle on the intake side, but more open and shorter exhausts tend to make the whistle louder. I'm not a huge fan of the exhaust whistle either though - i just like the added exhaust noise when a boosted engine comes on tap (i'm sure nearly all petrolheads here will agree to that).

its not necessarily the whistle that i care about.... its more the wooosh type boost noise i get, i like that noise just want it more predominant......
ill pull the intake apart and have a play and see if there is any difference...

A turbo diesel set up with a non wastgated turbo will whistle heaps more than a wastegated type. That's what I had on my 75 series, it was pretty loud.

mostly depends what sort of turbo it is i think,i had a schwitzer turbo on my old gq ute with straight through 3" exhaust and that thing whistled its head off..got a straight through 3" on my gu ute with factory turbo and it's nowhere near as tuff of a sound/whistle.

I run a DTS Dynamic turbo kit aftermarket on my TD42....
Would it be a wastegate type or not? how would i tell.... not very experianced with turbos on Diesels...

99.9% chance its an internally wastegated unit. There isn't a huge amount of diesels getting around with externally gated setups.
You should be able to see a diaphram on the turbo, with a pushrod going down to a small lever on the exhaust housing - this is the inernal wastegate system.
Externally gated systems have this bypass valve (wastegate) mounted on the exhaust manifold pre-turbo, and route exhaust gasses to atmosphere (dodgy) or back into the exhaust pipe post turbo.

wastegated and tdo5 mitsubishi turbo should whistle sweet, bb gt on my 80 whistles its head off at idle but has no deep bark or growl when you give it sum. nissan exhausts are a lot straighter with crap all bends with no muffler/hotdog you should get sumthing, i had to put a hotdog on my tdi gu cos its whistle/growl was deafening at 100kph couldnt hear radio, i lost all of the whistle at idle but when you up it you can still hear it, it sounded awesome but i couldnt live with it that loud neither could the missus

I have the same turbo on mine, it is a TD05H16g small compressor, if you put a gated boost controler on it you can get 20PSI out of it but it will be spooling its head off, sound great though.
I have modified mine to a TD05H 20G compressor and 8 cubic cm turbine housing with 68mm turbine wheel, performance thrust bearing kit and no waste gate. Straight through exhaust sounds awsome now and goes good to .

Don't a lot of primemovers etc run no wastegate?

Honestly, i wouldn't have a clue. Given the massive size of the exhaust housing on those particular turbo's, it would make sense given the requirements of an internal wastegate would be rather large.
I should have clarified, but in my above post i was reffering to TD42's and "small" displacement diesel engines, not diesel engines as a whole.

Yes most trucks have no waste gate as the turbo is matched to a specific rev range that is fairly narrow, i.e. 800 - 2000rpm. Truck turbos are usally more efficient as they don't waste any exhaust gas through a waste gate.
I was refering to TD42 earlier aswell with my hybride TD05H 20G and no waste gate.
The biggest contributing factor to turbo noise is the pitch and profile of the turbine blades. The amount of boost has little to do with it. More boost you will hear the compressor working harder usually.
A mate of mine has the switzer turbo on his GQ ute and it sounds like a mack truck from idle, but it doesn't produce much boost until 2000 rpm 8psi and max boost 13 psi 2800 rpm, it sounds great but next to mine it is a slug performance wise.
More noise doesn't always mean more performance.
If you want a better turbo go for the Garret GT28 RS .64 AR, this should give you both performance and noise.

Sound of the turbo is also affected by the turbo housing itself and how much it muffles the working noise.
I make 20psi @ 2400rpm on an SD33T with one of these. 12psi by 2000rpm.

I'm running the garrett bb turbo with 3" exh. pretty happy with both the performance & the sound. only running 11psi @ 530 deg atm.
