My thoughts....
- bent rod (have you done a compression test?)
- Crook glow plugs, resulting in unburnt diesel (white smoke)
- Buggered injectors or pump (for your sake, hopefully not the pump).

Can you give any more detail about this "drowning" incident? Is it a 2.8, 4.2 or 4.2T?

diesels are always very hard if not nearly impossible to start cold without glow plugs, so possible you could have a couple of them dead, or your glow plug timing unit / relay could of been shorted out resulting in poor glow of some description.......

when you say drowned do you mean engine swallowed water or just the ute got soaked?
if its swallowed water then id say chances are she is all over.
if its just taken a soaking id say the glow plug controller is full of water/buggered.

Check your glow plug fuse first, then use a voltmetre to see if any current is getting to your glow plugs. If currnet at glow plugs, pull them out and resitance test each one, while your at it compression test the motor. If compression is down start saving $$$$$$$$$$$$$$.
Its all a process of elimination.

id bet the glow plug timer/ controller is dead or a fuse gone. hence the light is showing, if it was just a dead glow plug i would not think the light would know aboutit, but check anyway.

once its at running temp does it feel ok? if so your a lucky bugger.

its a 4.2 patrol. didnt suck any water into the motor has got a snorkel, but the inside of the car was soaked. the performance of the car hasnt changed at all. i pulled that little green box out from where the fuses are and it didnt look too bad!
