Hi, i just purchased my first gq and have had some water pump issues. can any one tell me if the water pump on the diesel is interchangable with the petrol?

im not sure but i wouldnt waste your time in puting a 2nd hand waterpump in for the sake of $140 for a new pump, its not worth risking cooking your engine

x2... gq's have a thing for hotspots and cracking heads. theres
not many GQ's around the 89-94 year without a reconditioned head on them... (in my knowledge) a good water pump is very important!

nope pretty almost 100% sure they are different.
and as others said just buy a new one. the hassle of doing it again just isnt worth it.

I have heard a story/myth that someone somewhere has extended the impeller fins in a GQ water pump with good results............

thanks guys. i had a water leak from what i thought was the water pump but turned out to be the bypass hose. i replaced all hoses and there is no visible water leaks anymore however im still using water. there is no water in the oil, no evidence of moisture at exhaust but water level is still dropping. does any one have any advice? (its a 88 4.2 petrol)

There is a plate on the LHS of the engine about 4" x 2" not sure what its for but i have had coolant leak from there twice over the 20 years I've owned my Petrol GQ.

the plate is for an oil cooler on some models. on others they just fit a plate. could be that, or welsh plugs? some of which are behind that plate.
you'd notice water leaking down the the side of a block though fairly easily...
perhaps you think my radiator cap was a silly joke?
but i recently had the same problem of water vanishing.
turned out my cap wasnt sealing properley. so when your engine gets to temperature while your out and about it would evaporate out the top. by the time you stopped there would be no sign of leaky water anywhere, but ya radiator's nealy empty. (after a while) got a new one and bobs your untie! prob solved!
water dissapearing

the cap is brand new, i just cant work it out!
i even got the test to see if there is carbon minoxcide in the water which would indicate it was leaking into the cylinders but that came up fine...

are u ending up with a fair bit in your overflow bottle??
Mine was loosing water very slowly into overflow... ended up finding the overflow bottle cap was back to front. When it got hot it would push out water...then as it cooled it would suck air back in!!
swapped it over and havent lost a drop since.
