Steering box shim question regarding a 73 fj40

Ok i've got a 73 fj40 nothing fancy like power steering. So it works off of old fashion grunt work.
Heres my question. How do i know if or when I need to pull out one of the shims? It has two of them ones quite thin and flemsy the other is a bit thicker. Neither looked like they have been budged since the day they were put there.
Since its a 30 odd year old vehicle and has at least around 125 thousand miles (Have to guess the odometer broke at 107.) would it be about time after enough wear to pull one of the shims?
Which one? The thinner or thicker?
Or should I just leave it the hell alone because it worked fine before. Or at least as much as I could tell.
Also what kind of oil goes into the steering box?
