Hey all,
So I'm starting to think I might get a small cheap stereo for my BJ40. I don't want a regular DIN sized car stereo, as it's bait for theives (my car is doorless etc) and I don't want to spend much cash, plus don't need 90% of the features in these.
What I am thinking of is something like this -
http://www.jensenrvdirect.com/jensen-he ... radio.html
It has to have FM radio and the ability to plug in a USB or have AUX in. Does anyone know of something like this product?
Any suggestions welcomed

Look at the line of "Tuffy" consoles popular in Jeeps they are water resistant and scumbag resistant as well .. many models have a place for a stereo

I reckon if I had to do a stereo again in a 40 I would forego a head unit all together.
Just some speakers, a well hidden amp and a iPod/iPhone mount in your centre console. That way the head unit is only in the car when you are.

I use a removable face Pioneer in my Dakar.
It's a few years old so doesn't have a front mounted AUX in but you could wire the ipod into the inputs on the reatr of the head unit with a flying lead to plug into the ipod.

yeah I like that idea Ray. I might look into it, as I have an old amp lying around... Can you just plug an iPod etc into an amp without frying it?

if u just get the ipod audio cable you should be sweet, if u happen to have remote gain control on the amp even better,
and hook the remote wire up to acc so it just comes on like a normal radio, but, do iphones or ipods have radio?

older iPods etc don't have radios, but I'll forego the radio for this idea - I like the idea of keeping it all simple. speakers + hidden amp + cable hanging for my iPhone. Done

Can you get a radio app for the iPhone? That chinese amp/FM radio will probably do the job but it doesn't look very powerful. I think it's about 20W rms each channel (2). Certainly cheap enough to try out though. So yeah I'd just get a 12V charging car dock to mount somewhere handy, preferably in the centre console so it's out of the weather. Then just run a 3.5mm headphone jack to rca cable (dick smith/jaycar, etc) to the amp input and it all should work. As someone said above, you either run your remote turn on wire straight to accessories or to a switch off accessories if you want to be able to turn the amp off regardless of the ignition switch position.

while you might not like the standard DIN size stereo - you can pick up a dam good sony deck for around $120 nowadays... and its not that hard to make it harder to steal by putting a steel hose clamp or two through the chassis of the deck to your dash, and dont forget most have detachable faces too, which without that renders the deck useless.

Just buy an el-cheapo brand for $80 or so. Will do everything you need it to and nobody would be bothered flogging it.

Someone might try to steal it though, tearing apart the dash while doing it. Even if they cant get the stereo, you are left with a farked dash.
About six months ago i picked up a cheapo head unit from Repco that looks cheap, has an aux connection in front, and plays mp3 through a usb or SD slot on the front. It looks cheap n crappy and has no brand name, noone is going to bother stealing it.

That's the main thing I'm concerned about. Even a shitty headunit might look flashy to a opportunistic or pissed idiot.
I'll go for the totally hidden amp, waterproof speakers and cable and see how it goes.

When I had an LJ50 I bought a removeable Marine radio-cassette & "waterproof" housing for it. I mounted the housing vertically between the front seats (where an armrest would be a real vehicle), and a couple of waterproof speakers under the roll cage (behind the front seats.)
Whenever I left the car I took the unit out of the housing, wrapped it in an old flour bag and stashed it behind the driver's seat.
Not a concourse winning sound system, but it did the job for me.

Other option would be to pick up a factory deck out of an older Hydundai etc at the wreckers. Still fits in a standard DIN slot but I'll be bloody surprised if anyone flogs that!
