I know this is a bit of a noob question but what is the differance between a mq and a mk patrol. i am looking at putting mq diffs under my sierra so i am looking for a wreck or parts. Just want to make sure i get the right ones. Thanks.

AFAIK the diffs are the same (centres can be interchanged etc). The cast front housing usually can cause some dramas with conversions (I had to shift spring mounts on a mates G60 chassis to fit a MQ diff).Any reason you want to use MQ over GQ ? GQ are stronger and wider and would get my vote.
Just my 2c.

would love to do gq but mq heaps cheeper and the gearing is lower. am planning on running 36's so would lower diff gears would help.

A set of 4.6's would be sufficient and they are available for the MQ/MK diffs but try and stay away from the italian gear sets as my mate who owns the G60 found out they tend to be cheap for a reason.

diff centres are interchangeable (MQ to MK)
MQ diffs would be the pik as the l28 petrol and sd33 diesel (non turbo)
have 4.625 diff ratios standard
the MK sd33 diesel turbo have 4.33 ratios standard
then the P40 (4 litre petrols )have 4.11 ratios
(not suited to your needs)
MQ diffs as such are cheap , can pik up complete front and rear diffs for $50 to $100 just about anywhere

GQ diffs are probably too wide for sierras......
Im not a sierra person, but there is probably a good reason why almost every sierra with a diff conversion ive ever seen runs hilux or MQ diffs.....
ive seen GQ diffs on one once and the whole tyre was outside the guard lol......
