what do people do to lock rear of gen 1, 2.6L lwb paj?

Cheapest way would be to weld it, personaly I would stick a LSD in it if doesnt already have one, Mitsubitishi is known for having one of the tightest LSD around. If it already has one and you still want more just shimm it right up. other than that you start looking at lots of $.

yea was looking at shimming it but cant find out what kind of lsd it is? viscus etc etc?

They were still using ramp loading clutch type in the Gen 2, then moved onto Torsen. I can't imagine they had a viscous LSD in Gen 1.

usually shims are added to apply extra clamping force on the clutch packs. while you are in there look at renewing the clutch packs as these do wear out.
