Outer Limits 4x4 Board

hey i did a search but nothing to came up that really answered my questions.

without trying to start a garmin vs magellan war i am hoping to get some idea of which gps to go for.

i have looked into a few different handheld gps but generally have little understanding to what most of the reveiws are concluding. some are saying dont buy the garmin and others are saying dont buy the magellan - not to mention most of the reveiws are coming from the states which really doesnt help alot.

i would think there is a few fellas here that would have some experience with garmin and magellan handhelds that could shed a little light on them.

i just would like to map out tracks on 4wding trips and hunting trips, mark out interesting points along the way which i can upload to my computer to veiw and generally not get lost. i would also like to be able to track with it as i dont want my dog getting lost should he decide to go for a stroll while camping on our property.
i'm not interested in road mapping or really spending copious amounts of money.

forgive me if it seems like i am looking for someone to hold my hand (not the case), but never having anything to do with gps units before it all gets a little confusing with all the different reveiws that seem to do nothing but conflict - its like the holden vs ford thing.
just some straight up opinions from people that have some experiece with handheld gps would be awsome.

Hi all...Deadzook,Ive got the Magelin explorist 500 and a Garmin 60 both with toppo maps.The Garmin is better in every area.

im looking at getting the dbl din dvd/gps in dash combo from ebay.

any thoughts from people that own them?

have had a tom tom in the past and its a great little unit..

I have a garmin so I'm probably biased. I do like the availablity of free map data for them though. such as open street maps, and the 5m topos. I'm not certain that's available on a magellan.

Also when I was shopping the garmin was hella cheap compared to the magellan

Get yourself a Sirf GPS and run oziexplorer on your laptop in your car for offroad nav.

Shits all over any garmin or magellan.

I have a Garmin Oregon 300.
Way more than you want, but I swear by it. It's a fantastic unit that does nearly everything I could want. And battery life is spectacular.
It won't track your dog, but I guess if you tied it to him you could check where he has been.

Garmin over Magellan any day, and for so many reasons....
Have a look at the GPS Australia forums for all the info you could want on the pros and cons of each.

If you are mainly after mapping then look at the under $100 USD ones on deal extreme, you 'll get a 4.3"-5" screen and most will run Ozi ex plus any other gps software you could want.

Cheaper to get one off ebay, and dealextreme are less reliable than your average ebay seller. I've been waiting over 6 months so far for an order from them

My mate has a Garmin i think its a "Hunter" im not sure but it comes with tracking collars for his dogs, tells you how fast your dog is going, how much country he has travelled etc, top unit, handheld, has all the things that open and shut he says he has never had a better gps.

Im not sure of the sub name but try searching google you might come up with something.

I have a Garmin MAP60CS (now a MAP60CSX) and it works awesome.
Very easy to use, robust and just works!
Doesnt have all the bells and whistles of some of the newer touch screens though.

I've never had a problem with stuff i've bought there, 7-10 days for normal post is ok. I would rather trust DE than some of the ebay sellers.
