hi peops my GQ has a knocking sound in the front end somewhere but the bushes are all in good nick and don't seem to be the corse of it, any suggestions would be greatly helpful cheers

i believe its the floor panel on the front passenger side seems prity common.

if you've got a body lift, it'll be your floor pan for sure.

when does it make the sound? more info might make it easier to help you out

Yes more info!!! engine noise? steering noise? driving noise?

As cars get older factory body mounts get saged and become loose. If the bolts are rusted in it is a pita to get them out and replace which is what I would do and use new bolts.

Can you hear it when you rock the car when it's stationary? Alot more info is needed. Could be a shagged shock or a number of other things

ok um it makes a knocking sound in the front end its not motor or anything, i had flogged out lower control arms on it (replaced now) and its a similar sound to what they were making except its in the front, it makes no noise when i shake the car in any direction just when i go over bumps ect, it sounds like its right at my feet when driving

hey mate are u running a sway bar in the front they come lose alll the time (link pin to sway bar)put a spanner on it!!!

if ya can almost feet it in your feet id rekon its the floor pan as i have experienced on my safari. most suspension and steering problems ya usually feel though the steering if its the front end.

I have been chasing a front end knock for ages as well, and I think I've found it, with a little lateral thinking from a mate of mine (cheers Andy). Have a look at your engine mounts, it sounds strange but let me explain. After the mounts settle, the rubber compresses so the ends of the mounts hit/rub, this is why the rubber on the mount goes between the to plates to the end of the mount. After many miles the rubber on these ends wear off and then you have metal to metal contact. I know this is what my knock was, as I was at my wits end after replacing all the bushes in the front end, new engine mounts and fixed the body mounts. I checked and renewed wheel bearings and king-pin bearings as required.

After removing the engine mounts to find they didn't need changing I changed them anyway, and the knock was still there, but it was slightly less. This was when I cut off the flat end or as you look at them on the car the top plate, of the engine mount on the passenger side, easier to get to when its still on the car, the noise had all but gone and moved to the driver side. So with some careful positioning of the grinder on the driver side cut that mount as well and the knock is gone.

Now I would suggest to anyone that is going to try this to cut the mounts before you put them in. I didn't because I just couldn't be arsed after just changing mounts that didn't need to be changed.

Now this may place some undue stress on the engine mount, but I have spares so its worth a try, and so far no problems.

where do the floor pans generally crack ive heard heaps about it but never really seen any pics or anything like that. does it normally happen about where the join is or further forward?

hi we get alot of that problem with the bodylifs that we use in conjuntion with the factory ones .the knock is worse when they are wet and it sounds like its under your feet.take the factory body mount out and grind off 7 or 8 mill of the metal tube and refit problem solved most times. hope that helps.

Hi, by what you have said you will find that the body mount (2nd in which is near your feet) is cracked.

Lift carpet, take out grommet and have a look around body mount bolt.

The way to fix this (cheap) is to cut out hole and fit a (appox) 50mm body washer to body bolt. Replace carpet and take for drive.

Problem should be solved.

If you are real keen, I also weld a 5mm plate to the under side of the body were the bolt passes through.

Thanks heaps guys turns out it was the body mount under the drivers feet, the bolt had come loose, a washer and a bit of lock tight and she seems to be all sweet :-) thanks again
