d21 navara starter question?

A mate picked up a 96 mod d21 navara with a 2.4l injected petrol donk today. the starter wouldnt throw so I chucked the trusty screwdriver onto the solenoid and away she fired. Mate drove it home and when he arrived he popped the bonnet to notice the started had earthed out on something and was quite happily burning away. He managed to save the car but now a new starter motor would be needed. I have another mate who has a 89 modle navara petrol (not sure what capacity or anything) which he is parting out. Just wondering if anyone here know if the starter motors from the 89-96 d21 nav's are the same?
