Anyone know of any other car starter motors that fit easily into the GQ TD42 (5sp manual)?
Just hoping - I heard the Bluebird alternators interchange relatively easily?? Any ideas?
Replies appreciated

Don't know about starters, probably not a lot of car starters would have the power to turn over a 4.2 diesel, But as far as the alt goes, doesn't the td42 have a vacuum pump on its alt for the brakes?? like the sd33, maybe some internal parts are similar, but i know the mq alt is not at all like a bluebird one (owned them both and had alts apart) and they are the same era???

The TD 42 uses a reduction type starter motor. The motor commutator has a splined end that engages with the reduction gear which in turn turns the flywheel. While the motor part is similar to many car types, i dont think they would have the splined part on the end. Whats wrong with yours? They are pretty easy to fix--the only difficult bit is replacing the =ve and negative brushes.

Why change starter motors? I just finished rebuilding mine, the drainage hole was blocked so it was full of water. The bearings were rusted and seized up and the whole thing was rusty. I thought of just replacing it with a new one but I can tell you they aren't cheap!! After investigating further I buffed all the pieces on a wire buff at work, replaced all 5 bearings, replaced brushes (easy but they are crimped on and it is worth filing down the crimp before soldering new ones on) and regreased the spline. They are a pretty solid unit and I would guess you could bring yours back to life, mine was real bad and it come up like new, all up it cost me 50 bucks in parts to do and an hour or two of my time.
