If you are talking XJ Cherokee then best left alone the engine is plagued with problems and arn't a cheap fix

i would not say they are "plagued" with problems, you just need to be a little more carefull with them, such as stay away full on mud and be weary of overheating them as that is the quickest way to kill them as i did with mine

apart from that they are a fantastic motor and not too bad on fuel and when you get off road they really come into there own with a hep of torque

From what I have seen of them they are very sensitive and need to be looked after. And if it shits itself it needs to be rebuilt properly. The basic design seems to be very strong and if you can keep the cooling under control (XJ has bad cooling, petrol or diesel) they should last for a very long time. Its just head issues.

yeah both correct,
and they do have simple design flaws.
as all motors do, (monday's experts)
if looked after and not flogged to death, general maintenance kept up,
and some little - simple tricks like mounting the water header tank up 1 inch so its actually above the heads, these are just as reliable as the petrols and better on fuel.
i guess some would say they are more expensive then some to fix MAINLY the heads as there are 4 heads not 1, but any diesel motor is going to be dear to fix no-matter what type,
parts are harder to come by,

i get 700k's out of 76ltrs.
this is 50/50 highway/backstreets with lots of stopping.

probably the hardest thing about the diesels, trying to find someone to work on them, (depending on your location and contacts?)
i havent had any rejections yet but i do know 2 diesel mechanics and a general mechanic that are more then willing to help turn some spanner if need be, and source parts at a discount for me.
