garret turbo

Gday, A mates got a garret turbo (new) that he doesnt need anymore. Its a thrust turbo with a MTQ plate on it. What the difference in performance from a garret thrust turbo vs a ball bearing 1? Im still trying to id it and work out its size and if its any good for my truck or not. It says on it.

M24 A?R.42 EC-3... Exhaust side says TW1 M1.82
Its going on my 1HDT

Any info good or bad would help as I dont know much about this set up.

Tried a quick trip around google. Apparently they are a confusing M24 stamp on them. Seems to be a few sizes and combo's with that stamp.

Brought up a few questions, is it water cooled or just oil cooled?

What exhaust flange style is it, and what does it measure.

Most of the sites i found seem to suit SR20 (2L 4cylinders) which were a small upgrade for them.

it has a small compressor compared to its exhaust, so it looks good for a diesel. i think it will work (all things being the same eg. exhaust flange, water cooled). but being a multivalve 4.2L it may choke up top and you could probably find a bit bigger, better sized one if you are just looking for an upgrade. But depends where you want your powerband too. And pricerange/need for it.

Ball bearing will spool up quicker than a journal (thrust) type bearing. you also require less oil flow/pressure in a ball bearing turbo to work safely.

1.82 exhaust is for a race car....you wont get that spooling till 4000rpm. 0.6 is somewhere around what you need for a diseasal. Maybe the configuration is 0.82 i would expect MTQ to supply a diesel turbo.

Thanks guys.

I just put the exact code it had on it down. But its .42 compressor and .82 turbine with a t3 flange. Ive rang around and found out most about it. It all depends on what litre engine you put it on. Its a mtq turbo and made for diesels. I got told the turbo will spin up like a bitch and make 16psi (estimate) at 2500 rpm (max rpm before it runs out of puff) and he said he wouldnt be reving anymore than 3000 with that turbo on it.

I dont think its the right size for me. Would perfect for hilux 3.0 litre though. I will sell this 1 and get another for my 4.2

.8 be good, it's not just the housing that contributes to matching a turbo. .6 improved performance, .8 similar response with more top end.

Thrust bearing vs ball bearing makes a fair difference.
