When it cuts out do the instrument lights come on like its stalled, or does it loose all power (electrical)?

I would be checking for loose plugs to the ECU (passenger kick-panel), loose fuses/relays, and going over the wiring loom around the engine looking for any obvious signs of chafing/damage. Also, check battery connections (clean any corrosion, wirebrush if needed) and earth strap from - terminal to body.

I guess when its in "doesn't wanna start" mode, you have to rule out whether it's fuel (fuel pump dropping out, injectors not firing) or ignition (erratic or no spark).

with those symptoms I'd be putting my money on fuel or spark - unless you're getting various dash lights.

Pull your plugs out and have a looksee - their about $2 each to replace.

Jam a screwdriver into all of your leads and lay them across the rocker cover, see if you get spark.

Earth strap from body to block caused me all sorts of havoc in a few of my charades (I've had 4...)

If thats to no avail, when was the last time you changed your fuel filter? If you don't know, then the last time should be about now :)

Also, when its deciding its not going to start, after you've been cranking it, pull a plug and see if there is fuel on it.

Also when you pull your plugs, check and compare the electrodes between each other and report results here. Should be fairly clean - maybe a little black as these engines run rich by nature. Mark them as you pull them out so you know which cylinder is which.

If you identify any variations in fuelling between cylinders, get your plugs bathed. should be about $25 each.

I was going to mention the dizzy, but only after other options were exhausted. You see, I have read far too many threads of people opening their Feroza's dizzy only to have it all jump apart and fly in all directions - and we all know how easy parts are to come by ;)

The Feroza and Applause dissy are identical except for the cap ( Fez has 90deg lead exits - Applause are straight )

Applauses are very common at wreckers so theres no shortage of cheap parts. Self serve wreckers are a gold mine

You've got to be digging pretty deep into a disy for its to fly apart....

Oh and back on the topic........ what happens on the dash when it plays up is a really important first step.

mine was doing the same... it was a faulty ignitior in the dizzy was $900 for a new one .... so got a whole second hand dizzy from the wreckers $120 just put that in not a problem now

Wow - that's about 5 times what its worth.

Do not mention Feroza and don't go to a 4WD wrecker.

Its an applause dissy worth $25 from a self serve wrecker.

Any HD or HE engined Applause of any year.

Just in case your not aware the Feroza engine is the same as the Applause except for minor variations in accessories and cam timing. Many of the replacement Feroza engines sold by 4WD wreckers are Applause engines but doubled ( or a bit more ) in price.

If i pull one myself, i usually pay around $150 for a bare HD Applause engine - if i'm short of time ( or feeling lazy.... ) i get a complete one removed for around $350.

Mention Feroza and the price will skyrocket - ignorance is not bliss.

The ignition advance curve will be different for an Applause dissy, just keep an ear open for detonation. Or only strip out the ignitor or whatever you need.
