hey guys today my brother in law filled his ford courier td with petrol instead of diesel, he said it only ran for about two mins before it died, i went out to have a look, first i thought it had an air lock, then we realized what he had done, so the things I've done,
drop and drain the tank
gently blow out all the lines
replace the fuel filter
drop oil and replace oil and filter
filled with diesel
got it running sweet again.
now what else should we do?
anything in particular to look out for/replace?
thanks guys. james

The petrol would have made for some sweet pinging lol
I think you have done everything you need to do. One of our guys did the same thing in his bt50, cost $450 for a mechanic to do less than you have done.
He didnt replace the engine oil, just the fuel filter, cleared lines, etc.
If it was a modern commonrail diesel i would be concerend about the injectors, but i think a courier is just mechanical injectors?

Didn't need to drop the oil and oil filter really, but if its new it cant hurt. If you've cleaned it all out and theres any small trace of fuel left its not going to hurt it, it might have a cough or rise in rpm for a sec haha.
Could have drained fuel out of tank, changed filter, and cracked the injector lines at the injector and pumped a litre or so through the system, but thats keen.

having seen petrol in a common rail diesel more than once i would be more worried about the pump than the injecters.

You've done a good job and if its running all OK than he's lucky. MAte of mine did the same and was fine. If it ends up being down on power or not running quite right in some conditions then an injector pump overhaul will be likely needed. Petrol doesn't lubricate as well as Diesel and very little running accelerates pump wear. However most time engine stops before pump is killed though, CRD run much higher pressures and there pumps are often damaged.

You can get away with a certain % of petrol in diesel without a problem.

have done the same thing in my gu ute, luckily i only filled the subtank with petrol, drove home and had to dump it.
good for lighting bonfires!
you should be good now if its running fine, it would have detonated otherwise.

As said you have done more than most, inc me.. i had a mate fill my navara 3.0 td from empty with a full tank of premo, we only made it up the road and the engine was trying to stall and engine check light came on, as soon as i got out you could smell what he had done.. We only drained the fuel from the tank, filled it with 40lt of diesel again, pumped the lines out with the pre pump and bleed the new diesel through, it started and has not had a problem since..
cheers mark.
