Thats a bad stutter you have.
I swapped my 4runner(IFS and petrol engine), for a solid axle dual cab 86 lux. Never looked back.
Possibly get one that hasnt had much in the way of mods done, as alot of luxes that have had mods done to them have been thrashed off road, not hoon style thrashed, but more driven on harder tracks so theres more chance of some drivetrain damage that you wont find until its too late.
But yeah get a solid axle lux, they are tough as nails.

The only problem with the lux is that it will never drive like your commo does on road.
You can't have the best of both worlds, IFS is better for on-road and limits off-road ability.
SAF is better off-road but on-road handling is okay.
The problem you will find is that most diesel motors of that era are due for major rebuilds of everything on the motor.
2.8 diesels struggle to get to 120km/h on the road with 31s and stock 4.3 ratios revving on 3k.
Yes, parts are readily available and cheap as.
If I had my option again I would go with an 80 series or gq wagon that has been cut into a dual cab ute.
a 2.8 hilux diesel has 60kw at the flywheel.
Your commo would have more to like 190kw at the flywheel.
Cheers

Hiluxs werent built for comfort.
Hiluxs werent built for speed and power.
Hiluxs were built TOUGH.
And thats it.

you'll be hard up to find a 97 model lux with a solid front end.

its cheaper to buy it already done.
ballpark figure what is an ss vt worth?
ive seen 89-97 model lux's go for 1-2k simply because they had bald tyres n shitty paint but also in saying that ive seen them go for up around 10k for a neat and tidy one.

youll never get your money back on mods when you sell it so try to get it already done.
my 2c anyway.
all depends on what your going to use it for

wow

wow guys all that makes sooo much sense.
gives me something to think about
maybee ill just save and keep the ss and get a older 89/90 lux and yeah
or sell the ss and get a 89 ish lux and have some cash lefft over..
btw i work in a spare parts shop so parts arent a problem :)
thanks again guys
so another question i have
the reason i was thinking a hilux was for 1st: i love the look of a tray back dual cab ute, and 2nd if i ended up gettin a moto then i can put it on the back....
i have recently decided im not going to get a moto so yeah.
really i dont need one......
so was thinking a 80series....? what are they like off road compared to a lux etc etc
whats your opinions?
"im thinking 80series cause i can sleep in the back :)
thanks

80 series cruisers are confy off road and extremely capable, they are bigger and wider than a lux.
Coils all round make for a very good off road package out of the box.
But as said, you need to weigh up what you want to do, what kind of terrain you are looking at doing, and think about everything you need out of your car.
The only way your car will suit you, is to figure out what it is you want out of it.
I hope that makes sense.

mmm

if you decide to go an 80 series try to get one with a max 3 inch lift. Any higher and it must have either factory part time or an adaptor kit installed. Front tailshafts are too short and get worn out real quick on fulltime models with big lift.

My 80's got a 5 inch lift and my mates got a 93 lux and i can tell you my 80 is 1000 times more comfortable to drive. Turbo diesel is the way to go or a petrol on gas these cruisers can suck the juice.

I would choose an 80 series any day of the week than a lux.
Can do so much more to an 80 series than a hilux.
Due to the wider wheel track they are easier to engineer for big lifts, are more stable on road.
and dudelux! bahahaha built tough hey?
Try telling that to my one that has 4 cracked pistons, blown head gasket and cracked head, and its a bonus if after wheeling i don't have any breakages or damage.
Hilux diffs are small, the 80 has a small front diff as well but the rear diff is big and the 80 series front diff is wider.
Hilux's have terrible steering as they use the push/pull system which sucks when your off-road.
if you want something that will take abuse and you dont want a pretty car or comfort then get a lux and keep the commo.
VT ss would be worth about the same as a clean late 90s SAF lux and early 90s 80 series.

Paul

I just bought a 93 lux with 2-3 inch lift, 33's and a lexus v8, fully engineered for the motor and trans ( not the 33's obviously ) for under 10 grand. I previously had a surf 2.4td with front locker

I am so happy with my new truck. has great power, about the same fuel economy as my old 2.4td and is more capable off road with out a locker than my old one, but only slightly less comfy on road

I got an absolute bargin, so they are out there

Happy hunting

unless your going to buy a thumpstar not much more of a motorbike will fit on the tray of a dual cab hilux. To have my bike in the back of mine with a tub the rear wheel axle is pretty much on the edge of the tail gate
