i found with my winch that the wire broke in the remote lead....
i drove over it at like 9pm on a weeknight trying to get out of my property and got BOGGED...so i had to winch it in the rain
GOTTA love that!! got bogged on 5acres and my driveway is ashphalted but i couldnt see it over the dirt.
it ended up being a broken wire in the 5mtre hand piece.
it showed no visible damage to the surface....
the winch worked fine when got it looked at.

the winch solenoids are wired up like 15 different ways to the 3 solenoids.... my sparky said to me...wasnt a quick 5min check..to see if winch needed repairing.
i just asked if he could check to see it goes in and out with his test light.......
highlighting it was the remote handpiece at fault..

its a sparky job if its any harder than this..
i can wire up lights.....and simple stuff but winches are way.............OUT OF MY LEAGUE...
this is what happened to me....
so i hope it helps
