The first thing to do is to ensure the lever isn't hitting the floor or is too tight against the rubber boot. Remove the boot and take it for a drive. I'll almost promise it won't jump out of gear. (assuming the body isn't pushing on the lever.

if your car has a body lift then you may need to lengthen/move the hole slightly.

I just put a transfer lever kit through mine and it engages a lot more convincingly now. The kit comes with a bush the lever sits into, a new rubber boot and retaining ring and 2 replacement ball bearings and springs (used to hold the internal shifting shaft into position, and the spring is longer so it holds tighter) and a new plug (that holds the new spring and ball bearing, and it too is longer so it holds it better)

The kits are available on ebay.

It does have body lift, so i will have a go at banging the hole abit bigger then if it still disengages ill have a look at this kit. Thanks for all the info

You could also have a bent long side transfer case arm given you have gears in the case. Eyeball the longside mount and see if its twisted and bent.
