I have an 02 ST plus on gas, have had it on gas now for 40k, had no issues so far with the head, however i did have a lot of teething problems at the start with the whole system.

Only issue I have with the gas is that THERE IS NO FUEL ECONOMY, they are friggen terrible, I would more then likely say that the 04 will have LPG injectin which is a little better then the standard kit, but I dont know any one with that system. But they are a great car, I love mine but it may be up for sale soon too.

I looked into the injected gas system, looking at bout 5k plus

I also have an 02 4.8 plus 5 speed, get bout 18ltrs per 100ks.

I would much rather have 4.8 over 3.0 and 4.2td thats my opinion.

Diesels are too pricey to service, and are slugs unless you modify.

Mother in law has an 05 4.2td ,3'' exhaust , more boost , snorkel etc etc.

4.8 would still walk all over it

It just comes down to your needs...

I have a head off one at rhe moment. The heads are very expencive to do up. I did valve clearances about 40.000km ago as it had a slight miss. After doing valve clearances it still ran a bit rough but got worse very graduley. I rechecked them the other day but all valves had .3mm clearance. I did a leakdown test to find no 4 exhaust valves were leaking. Now off with its head at 1500.000km. It would be a costly job if you couldnt do it your self

If you aren't worried about fuel consumption, why do you want to put the 4.8 on gas? It will reduce power and also gas burns at a greater rate and greater temperature than petrol, which is the reason why you can have problems with the head.

I know its not the same engine but its similar, i have a tb42e auto in my gq and i get around 18L/100km on petrol and around 23L/100km on gas. Yes it is cheaper to run it on gas, which i do as its my run around car as well as my weekend wheeler. That is the reason i got one on gas.

So if your not worried about fuel consumption, therefore cost of driving what is your reason for putting it to gas when it will put unnecessary stress on the engine?

mate ask yourself what you want, power or economy????. I own both these motors, if your after sheer power and not economy definatly go a 4.8 not on gas. These donks are thristy but fun left standard. If you want economy forget about a 4.8 on gas go a 4.2td, these donks dont go to bad with the right turbo but have great economy compared to a 4.8 petty. I;ve never heard from someone running gas without problems.
