TD42 130KW

Just wondering how much it would cost to have an engine upto that power level. I am wondering if it more cost effective to a GQ TI power it up or buy a 80 series Sahara turbo diesel. It will be GQ TI or 80 Sahara I am not fussed as they both good and bad points on either. I had a Landcruiser for 7 years so I know about the toyo but don't know much about the Nissan so any info is welcome thanks.

What exactly are you asking,do you have a turbo engine now or are you starting with a N/A TD42.

I think he's asking if he's better to buy a TD42 GQ Ti and upgrade it to the same power as an 80series TD Sahara standard. Being that the 80 series is a much more expensive vehicle to buy.

My vote is the patrol but I am biased as I love GQ's.

to get a TD42 up to 130kw (at the wheels so you would have to upgrade the 80 a bit to achieve the same thing) I'd put a decent turbo kit on it, 3" exhaust, a boost compensator as long as the pump is ok otherwise rebuild the pump at the same time and a good tune should see it reach the power you're chasing. Intercooling will make it better again.

Depending where you get the work done, expect to pay anywhere between 4 to 6 grand for the turbo kit, 2-3 for the pump mods, 1000 for an exhaust with dump pipe. A few hundred to get it tuned and say 500 for problems that always pop up and a service should finish it off.

So that's between 8 and 11 grand for all the mods to make a kick ass TD42 and if it didn't make more than 130kw I'll kick myself in goolies.\

Now go look for GQ Ti's that are 11 grand cheaper than 80series sahara TD's.

Thanks for that this is what I wanted cos I am looking at a GQ TI for $12K
and a 80 series for $17K both around 180,000 k mark. If I spend the 10k on GQ it might be the same as spending 5k on 80. Will see who does me the better deal.

I basiclly got what you said above (unsure of turbo model but its a water cooled garrett) injectors pump boost compensator 3" stright through.
standard intake pre filter taken out 15psi boost, 2.5" dump (for now:D ) and no intercooler yet ;) 280km on the clock

it was dynoed at 91.6rw/kw, I want a top mount 3" dump new intake so it flows a bit better and I would be surprised if I get 120kw

but if you want that sort of power out of a td42 GQ make sure its 92 or before (silver rocker cover)

100rwkw is about all you will get out of a GQ injector pump you will need a GU pump or get yours moded with an 11mm rotor head and boost compensator.

I vote nissan of course.

Thanks guys I have done a bit more diging on the 80 and the later the better as the 24valve is better again. But of course now I am looking at mid 20k

what size tyres are you running? The GQ pump is a big limit but you should have got more than that. Is the turbo a ball bearing one?

The only problem with late model 80 series with the decent motor is the price. I still vote GQ.

My GQ has a roller bearing Garrett, 18 pound boost, front mount intercooler, 3' straight through exhaust and rebuilt pump with 11mm head, made 150 kw at the rear wheels but need to consider upgrading cooling system as I just cooked my motor!

I am most probably retarded or something but i dont understand chasing all this hp???? if it is kw people are after then go for a petrol. if it is longevity, reliability, and low down touque you are after than go the diesel, i did. And spending upto 11k on the engine alone of a gq???? seriously???? Why?

I went twin turbo with my TD42 have not intercooled it yet only wound the pump up a bit. intercooler will be fitted very soon and then off to the dyno. I have mates all with intercooled single turbo's and i reckon mine would beat all of them on the Dyno (at least for torque). It boosts at 1300 revs and holds right through to 4000 revs.
If you can weld you can do this set up for very little cost.

No offense but this can be done with the right choice of single turbo.

No offence taken. I know you can get the same from a single but everyone does that. I wanted to be different and i know i am not the first to twin turbo a patrol but it is rare.

Anything is possible with the TD42, why would you go a petrol when it just dies in the ass when you go through a big puddle????

My Td42 has a turbo and a fuel pump and some pipes connecting them all together and it was dyno @ 170RWKW & around 650Nm of touque with a cracked piston and a leaking head.

Now it does not have a cracked piston or a leaking head and its running a much better intercooler as well as more boost.......
Yeh it goes ok for a diesel............ :)

care to elaberate on your set up
if I could crack 120KW with a intercooler and dump pipe I would be over the moon but 170KW...... well its the sort of thing I dream about haha

Its also something which will make you very broke :( Nothing good is cheep
you should get 120kw easy enough, just get a decent turbo wind you fuel up and boost and see how you go. then you start on all the little things to get a little more and a little more and finally a little more Hp until your happy.

The GT28 series ball bearing turbo is a good place to start.

But if your dreams are to come true you will need to take out a small mortgage.
:)

here is the truck the engine is in.

I never said you couldnt its just that the silver top will handle the power longer and be more reliable
