Hi, i am currently putting a commodore supercharged 6 into my swb nh.
i have broken rear axels before with the current diff and stock 3.0, and i have stumbled across info about the nj 3.5, or diesel having a 12 bolt 31 spline diff instead.
So the question is, is this a bolt in conversion?
Do i need the rear tailshaft from the nj also, or are they the same?
Also are the front diffs identical between the two models? (except ratios)
I am aware of the ratio changes involved, and with the extra power i look forward to the gear-up of the 3.5 centres.
Need to know, as im about to fit my front locker, so i need to be fitting it to the correct centre!
Another thing i stumbled across is the slightly thicker front disks on the nj 3.5. Will these go on no worries?

pajero diff upgrade

Yes it is a bolt in conversion for the rear 9.5" diff.
The tailshaft will have to be modded though to suit.
The large diffed rears all had the 8" front HP diff so as long as yours is a 5sp it will have the 8" diff (3.0 auto's had the smaller 7.25" front diff) so it will be interchangeable.
I'd check the front rotor diameter early NH shorties had 258mm diameter & 22mm thick rotors (lwb had 276mm diameter & 22mm thick) 92 onwards they went to 276mm diameter & 24mm thick rotors on all 3.0.
The NJ 3.5 had 276mm diameter and 27mm thick rotors and these are a direct bolt in with the existing knuckle & calipers.
Some NK 3.5 (16" wheels) and NL GLS had 314mm & 24mm thick rotors but you need the calipers as well to do the conversion and you have to run 16" rims to clear the calipers.
If you have the 258mm rotors and run 15" rims then fitting the NJ rotors with good 4wd pads would be a good upgrade.

Yes if you are breaking 3.0 axles then the 9.5" diff is a good upgrade especially if your running 33" + tyres and go hard. It will eliminate this issue. No-one I know of has managed to break one of these axles.
You can also get the 9.5" ARB locker now.
You will loose 0.5" of clearance but it's a small price to pay.
If you do have the smaller front rotors then the NJ rotor swap with some good pads would be a good upgrade as well.
