700's are on par with a t350 strength wise, i'd go the 400 or a 4l60e

I have a t700 cable version here that I was going to run behind my BB but a lot of guys in the know said it would not be as tough as a t400.
I will probably go to a patrol auto not sure yet. although a lot of people run t700 behind big motors. The extra gear was a big plus for the t700 as mine will be a tow car. hard decision to make as you dont want to have to do it twice.

Here are some length of autos out of my research.

c4 432mm/17 inch
th350 553mm/21.75 inch
4L60E 556mm/21.9 inch
4L80E 590mm/23.23 inch
6L80E 590mm/23.23 inch
th700 594mm/23.4 inch
th400 619mm/24.37 inch
patrol auto 680mm/26.8 inch

If you get a th700 in the car, then you will get a 4l80e easy in too and that is a strong 4 speed. I thing the 4l60e would not hold up - it is the same auto strength wise like a th700/th350.
Holden LS engines are reduced in torque down low, because the 4l60e are so weak. 4l65e is a bit a stronger but still nothing for off road.

If you need it short and strong, then take a Ford C4 and build it up.
The C4 is only 17 inch long if you dont use the governer and run a manual valve body.

I gave up on autos and just use a 5 speed nissan box.
But i think auto is the go.

Hope that help.

Chris

Good info.
How hard is it to get a C4 to bolt up to an LS though?
Would you need some sort of adaptor?
