Newbie TJ questions

picked up a tj saturday - took it wheelin sunday.

1- where do recovery points on a heep get attached?
it got some crappy loop ontop off the chassis and no other holes to mount to.

2- whats teh go with 5th gear? Im constanlty downshifting to 4th and not holding 110kph

3- It has 2" lift and 31's -- How necessary is getting a slip yoke elimin. kit?

Stock bumpers? On the front from memory you should see two bolts through the bumper into the chassis rails - they are probably torx heads. You can put standard recovery hooks there instead. I've always had an ARB bar so look at the recovery hook section in the FSM

For the rear, I just used standard hooks picking up one of the existing towbar mount holes and one I drilled. No photo any more but this write up is what I used to have

Plus a snatch strap with a narrow loop (eg some ARB ones) will fit in the neck of a hayman reese towbar. I just use one of those hayman reese recover hitches now.

Unless you think its out of tune and down on power then it probably just oversize tyres and the stock gearing. 33's and 5th was a bit of a non-event for me before I regeared.

I assume 2" coil lift. Unlikely you will need this. You may have transfer case spaces fitted already or can do so if you are getting vibes. However some people get driveline vibes after even only a small lift. Adjustable arms, motor mount lift are other ways of tweaking the driveline angle too.

I use the towbar for rear recovery.
as far as 5th gear goes, 31's sap a lot of the power and even i struggled to use 5th when i had 31's. I had to re-gear my diffs to make 5th gear worthwhile. About $1000 - $1200 to regear your diffs but worhtwhile ;)

Mine is up about 60mm lift i run 32" but i have Auto is just great all round. Sometimes i run my 33" muddies and still it's great on road, but must use low range when off roading. Each to there own if you like manual or Auto as i get asked all the time. TJ and most Jeeps around the same years have a very good low range i think it's around 272 or so. Soon i'll be looking at diff locks and then i'll lower my diff ratio.
Question for "JEEPS" i like your flared Gaurds! Did you make them or bought??

They're made by Bushwhacker, they're the 'flattie' style.

so far ive found out-

It has aluminium spacers on the bashplate underneath.

The recovery points are located behind the hoop of the chrome twin tube with single hoop street bar :roll:

Is there another way to rout the exhaust so it doesnt cross under the gearbox?

what are factory ratio's?

The missus wants to do a bit off driving in her heep and it uses a crap
load of fuel.

It has a Rapid?? chip plug in fuel thing so would it be worth getting the throttle body spacer?

I'm pretty sure the standard exhaust on all TJ's didn't cross under the transmission. Unless you mean right up under the engine behind the sump, other than that they just normally run down along the drivers side chassis rail?

Yeah the exhaust should come down the passenger side, warp forward around the sump - not under, and the back down the drivers side next to the gearbox. There are some aftermarket extractors which go under the sump rather than around it. Is that what you mean? They are sort not to buy!

3.07 is stock TJ manual diff ratio. For 31's 4.11 would be good. Plenty of ratio calculators for TJ's on the web if you want to compare higher or lower options.

Fuel economy is never great out of that 4.0l straight 6. I get 15l/100k constantly (33's, 4.56 ratio). If you are getting 12-13l/100k that would be pretty good. There's $$ in regearing and most people would suggest doing lockers at the same time if that was your plan. Even more $$. I wouldn't bother regearing chasing fuel economy.... only for better offroad crawling.

I have the throttle body spacer (bought it second hand). When I first put it in, it felt like a bit more power in the mid/top when going up hill. Maybe it was my imagination, may be its snake oil, maybe it is just some red shiny bling for the engine bay.

Those aluminium spacers are to drop the transfer case slightly to reduce rear drive shaft angle. Pretty standard inclusion with most 2" to 3" coil kits.

I'm in Redcliffe, if you want to bring the heep and a few beers over, I'm happy to have a look at your TJ.
Be good to get out on a run with other TJ's so you can see what works, and what doesn't..

Throttle body spacers have always been regarded as a no no, very few worked so save your money. Far as fuel economy goes well it seems to be the auto's get good fuel economy. My mrs used to run a servo 3years ago and she made a point to ask the TJ owners what economy they got and it seemed to be most auto owners where happy. Well i have an auto and i'm really happy with the economy and to make things better i'm also on LPG. Far as extractors go well mine go under the sump and what a difference they make alone and like stated back one post i run 32'', and i drive al lot from Brisbane to Bundaberg and thats towing a box trailer loaded and it's got heaps of grunt. But the end of the day it's a 4wd and i don't care about economy other wise i'll drive a rice burner.
