VW turbo from deisel golf suit 1HDT?

Looking at one on ebay and looks like a cheap option to spark up my 1HDT. I can't get my head around the way you work out how you get the right size etc but these work real well on the VW's and hoping they would suit a bigger motor. Here's the info listed:
this is a used turbo off a vw golf/pollo/pasat/bora...ect it has a massive exhuast housing(for powerful spool) with square 4 bolt flange

a smaller compressor housing(for instant responce and hi psi boost)with a t3 flange...mighty little bugger!!

compressor wheel/inlet:38mm outlet:38mm

exhuast wheel/inlet:41.5mm outlet:43.5

it has a wastegate with vacum valve for boost control.

spins freely....has slight movment in axle without oil presure as its ment to be off a car...

turbo is good for instant responce powerful low end tourqe and long legs...

What size is the Vdub motor its come off of?

2 ltrs from memory so that turbo will be way too small for your 4.2 and will spin up and then run out of puff.

Well i was thinking that the garret turbo's some of the blokes on here are running were made for cars like 200sx which are 2.0l. But how do the exaust gasses vary from a petrol motor of 2l campare to a deisel of the same size in spooling the turbo? Oldies have got a new tiguan VW with the 2l deisel and its turbo spools real quick and doesn't seem to run out of puff but its years ahead in tech to my old girl.

Have a look where a VW diesel revs to, and at what revs it runs out of puff. A sr20 (200sx) will rev twice as fast as your diesel and never really run out of puff.

Two of them would work, but be completely pointless.
4.2 litre diesel vs 1.9 litre diesel. ;)

A T28 from an SR20DET is a very good starting point. From there it depends what your goals are.

Ok by the numbers i've posted of the said turbo it would be no good? I can't remember off the top of my head the garret one's they're using on the gt2876, a/r ratio and all that. What grabbed me was the T3 flange and quick spooling. So everyone's saying my motor would be too big for the turbo, is it because of the numbers or just saying it would be because its off a smaller motor?

Turbos work on airflow. It's pretty clear that the airflow for a 1.9L diesel is a lot less than a 4.2 even taking into account the 1.9 revs higher.
The GT2876R is a big turbo that isn't going to give you decent low end boost, it has a 76mm compressor wheel compared to the 49mm compressor wheel on the VW turbo. None of them have a T3 flange, but neither does your 1HD-T exhaust so it doesn't matter really.

BTW, the numbers you've posted for the VW turbo aren't right. If you want to know exactly what you have you need the garrett model code, it's a six digit number followed by a four digit number.

crudely speaking, doesn't a 2L motor running at 4000rpm displace the same amount of air as a 4L running at 2000rpm?

Yes. That's why 2 litre petrol turbos work well on 4 litre diesels.

Oh wait a minute, I thought Rowen was talking VW tdi turbos, not TSI.
Yes the 2 litre VW turbos will work on a 1HD-T, but they're smaller than most other 2 litre petrol turbos. Borg-Warner/KKK/Schwitzer make them.

Yeah i'm talkin bout the Tdi turbo, it sold for $135 or so yesterday but thats another idea with petrol tsi. Haven't looked into what that one's running.

Based on the topic heading he is talking about the 2.0 ltr tdi engine.

Having owned a jetta for 3 years I can attest to it being a great little engine that will rev up to about 5000 rpm. Max power at 4200 rpm. Turbo kicks in about 1500 rpm from memory.

I have no idea about how you would go about fitting it or how well it would work in the desired application.

I always find this site fairly usefull when sizing a turbo.

Definately go the GT60. Its perfect for your motor :D

I reckon the GT30R would be a good match. Being BB it should spool reasonably early.

Or the T28 option as mentioned above.

The next trick is either finding the cash for a new one, or finding a car that had the right size turbo AND TRIM that you can pinch one off ;)

It wouldn't suprise me if the vw turbo were variable vein - adding more complexity to the issue

Yes I'm pretty sure they are variable vane, bloody responsive too.
