22r to 18r

hey guys im just wondering if anyone would know if a 18r engine will bolt up to the same mounts and gear box as my 22r in my 96 4x4,
the problem i had is my 22r motor is blown and im sick of having the car sit there as i save up to do a v6 or v8 conversion, my mate has a 18r engine and box that he wants to get rid of and thought i could bolt it in till i save the cash for the other conversion..
and help would be appreciated

some one must of done a conversion from 18r to 22r so im guessing it would be that same just reversed, just need to know so i can start, or wheter it give it a miss and save bit more cash and do the v8 or v6 conversion

i would not recommend it, the 18r will not have the torque that the 22r will, you will find it more sluggish and using more fuel, however the engine should bolt up depending on sump config

yeah im fine with it being slugish, just want it back on the road till i can get more cash, thought it would of been ok seeing that im getting it for nothing
just finding if hard to find a 22r engine cheap enough

my son runs an 18r in 80 model hilux comp truck they are bomb proof and it does everything the 8s do just a bit slower and the best part about it is he doesnt break the drive train . Cant go wrong

Hi,
18r will go straight in where your 22r is. Only thing is some of the bellhousing bolts don't quite line up - i think one or two.......
18r is plenty torquey, doesn't rev too hard. They are tough, but not bulletproof. A 32/36 weber makes a world of difference or manualise the vac secondaries on the carbie. Check out toymods for things people do to 18rs to make them acceptable.

funny you should say that about the old 18r
i have owned i dare say 8 of them in my life not one has been the same as the next
i have had one that was torquey but would not rev
and another that reved to the moon we are talking 6500 vrs 4500
both bog stk motors
you just dont know till you bolt it in

Hi,
part of it depends on what vehicle it cane from. Whilst essentially they're all the same, the hilux 18r performs differently to the Celica 18r and so on. Mainly due to different carbies. Egr effects it too. Don't forget they're a 30+ year old engine sometimes too, so some are getting very tired.

i have not had one for about ten years
the best one i ever had blew smoke
the whole time i had it burnt oil and fowled number 4 plug after 2000k
it revved hard and had torque it used to toast my mates 22r
it was bog stk would hapily run my dirty old hilux 4x4 off the speedo ,speedo ended at 150 and it would go way past that
i never wanted to rebuild it incase it lost "it" so i just fed her oil as she wanted it
my mates used to call it "far lap" (as it was a freak) as it could not be explained
it was just funny as hell
in saying that most dont do much at all power or torque
