Grinding noise in 4x4

I have a 75 series cruiser with a 1hz and since going to rainbow a fortnight ago, I have developed a loud grinding noise coming from the gearbox area. Its only there in 4x4, both high and low, and only there when there I take my foot off the accelerator. Anybody have any idea what this is? It's got me stumped. I recently replaced the front shaft with a spare one I had sitting there, after the other one that was in there was making a noise (a different noise to the one thats there at the moment).

Any help would be great, cheers. (Or at least some ideas so if it ends up in a mechanic I don't wind up paying $500 and looking like a wanker for a loose bolt or lack of grease lol).

What sort of supension lift do you have and do you have a castor correction?

take your front tailshaft out and go for a drive in 4wd mode.

see if it still makes a noise. it could be front diff

Its your slip joint on your front shaft.

mine made the exact same noise twice now first it was the slip joint on front shaft as mentioned. Second was the tranfer was really low on oil. When it was transfer though it did it all the time even in 2wd.

Apparently there is a seal between gearbox and transfer and when these get old and hard they let oil through.

Id take front shaft out first and see if it stops it. If so check for movement in slip joint if slip joints fine its your diff. If its still there top-up oil levels in gearbox / transfer. If its still there then there may be a big problem and it'll cost you a bit

ive got a very similar noise makes it as you take your foot off the accelartor and just as you put it back on again but doesnt make it when accelarating hard had tail shaft ballanced new uni's re-built t/case so you can probly rule them out i guess in mine it only leaves diff or g/box .if you do find out what the noise is let me know mine is giving me a headache and i could of got myself a set of lockers for what i have spent on trying to fix the noise

Cheers for the replys.
T-Diesel, its got stock suspension, no lift and just running 31s.

I'll try taking the shaft out again and see what happens, and hopefully i'll be able to nick someones else driveshaft and give it a go. I guess its just a process of elimination. I'll get it up on the jackstands again this weekend when I'm doing the swivel hub and try and hear where its coming from. Hopefully its just the uni's or somthing else simple.

Madabout80s, if I find out what it is, I'll be sure to let you know. And I know what you mean about the money, I'm doing the swivel hub this weekend, and its going in for an injector pump rebuild monday (I'm ignoring the squeaking clutch for a while haha). I spend more on just keeping it on the road then I do toughening it up, its a bit depressing....but I guess need is more important than want.

No worries. I was thinking that it could be a castor correction issue with the angle of unis or something.

Does it happen in all gears and how long does the noise last for?

From memory it happens in 2-5, I don't know about 1, I'm never in it long enough to find out. If it's just the shaft I might wait until I get a lift, and just buy a new shaft to suit. I've got to start watching what I spend as of 9am this morning, who knows what's going to happen to the country. A fair bit off topic, but, Rudds done a fair few things wrong, but what is putting Gillard in ment to achieve?

Its not your uni's. Its your slip joint. Did you have your slip joint replaced with a new 1?

The mechanic may have said it is fine but its like a noisy crown and pinion when only some of the fins are meshing. Mine made the exact same thing. Did everything including uni's, gear and transfer. It was the slip joint all the time. Only had the slightest bit of movment. Enough to make that horrible noise and vibration when your coasting along (somewhere between accel and engine brake, maintaining speed). Ive since spoken to about 6 guys with the same problem. Everytime it was the slipjoint.

how do i take my tail shaft out is only a matter undoing the bolts on the uni joints as i might start with taking my front tail shaft out and take it for drive to see if the noise stops
