Gday
im looking at buying some second hand 5.29 diff gears

Only thing im worried about is the bloke said it has a welded CIG locker in the rear.

can i take this locker out and put in an arb air locker from a 4.31 centre?

Thanks

Yes, this will however require a full rebuild. Those 5.29s would want to be cheap to justify the idea.

I bought a cruiser with a CIG locker in it.
They had left the welding slag in the diff and it absolutely rooted the gear faces as it chewed around in there.
The whole centre ended up being binned, nothing was salvageable.

Your call, but I would be avoiding it as a long term prospect.

is a cig locker an actual locker or is it called cig welded locker because cig is a bran of welder?
newb question i know.

I will be inspecting all the teeth and everything before purchase.

Could i put the 5.29 gears in place of the 4.3's?like use them in the 4.3 3rd member housing?

so instead of changing the locker only the CW&P would be swapped

Correct. See here http://gallery.oldholden.com/Dusty+Dirt ... cked+diff/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

You should be able to use your centres and just replace the C&P.

Brand new 5.29 CW+P can be had for under $500. A diff rebuild will cost around $500 - i personally wouldn't pay for a rebuild using 'untrusted' gears.

What vehicle? If it's a cruiser, then yes. If it's a hilux, then most probably yes.

its a hilux.
im tryin to do it on the cheap so dont want to pay 1000 for gears when i can get these ones for 200 each.
Cousin owns newcastle gearbox and diff so i can get them swapped for nothing

Surprised no one has jumped on this already

A CIG locker is the poor mans way of locking a diff, by welding the gears up and when they blow they are only good for the scrap heap.
I have done it and it works a treat but full time locked on the road is bad news.
