Alternate power steer pump for GQ

Hey.
Posting this for a mate. Couldn't really find info I needed.
Mates got a GQ dsl wagon, power steering pump has started to leak. Now what I need to know, is the GU power pump a stronger unit?
If so will it bolt in no modifications at all?
Only asking before the cash is laid out to get it repaired.
Cheers Justin

The GU TD42 pump puts out more pressure since it has to work a bigger steer box on the GU patrols. they are a better pump

I don't think so, and if they are supposed to be higher pressure it will be almost negligble in stock form and more often than not the pressure will be down on factory spec. As for flow you will find most pumps have way more flow capacity than actually required , and this is often just old or badly adjusted flow control valve setup.

well if thats the case why did i have problems with my GU box and GQ pump when backing off from revs to idle would the steer box loose power steering yet when a GU pump was added the problem was solved, yet when i have the GQ box GQ pump this didn't happen?
Answer would be higher pressure on the GU pump to help with bigger internal box

no answer would be crap pump. And what you are describing is flow related not pressure. Mains system pressure is preset and has approx the same amount of force at idle than at full flow. I have tested pumps that have anywhere from 700psi to 1300psi, I think its sometimes just the luck of the draw. The flow control valve curve can be modded for way more flow than a stock PS box will ever need.

Just had a look at the GQ & GU manuals
GQ stock pressure is around 1200 - 1337psi ( cant be bothered opening the manual back up for the exact figure)
The GU one has a pressure just over 1220psi
Regarding this flow valve as there is no mention of it in either manual. I take it its not an adjustable valve but moreso a restrictor orifice. Would this be correct?
My pump is cactus so I am thinking I might look at this during the rebuild
cheers

clanky your right. I knew they were close.
GU is 1180psi - 1266psi
So the gq has a better starting pressure. But sadly most of the time when tested they very rarely get above 1100psi. Generally its the flow control spring that has gone soft, and this makes it harder to steer at low revs.

Thanks for the heads up Madengineer1
I will be having a close look at the flow control valve spring during the rebuild. Might shim it up a bit for the Mrs!
cheers
