reduction gears, auto or landcruiser 5 speed?

I would like some input fom peoples opinions etc on which way to go either 5 speed or auto and what redution gears i should fit.

I have a hilux cab on an 80 chassie with a 350 chev in it.

currently it has a noisy 60 series 4 speed in it and a marks adaptor kit. I have altered the gear box tunnel to suit it and it is a tight fit.

I run 35" road wheels but happy to go bigger if required

I run 38" off road wheels and would never fit smaller

I run standard 4.1 ratio diffs

I have a 60 series 5 speed here (that i would have checked out before/if fitting it).

I love the idea of going to an auto and i am definatly going to fit reduction gears while im at it.

I need a longe front tail shaft which the 5 speed would help with

Would appreciate any input and ideas you have to offer Thanks Darren

x2....this is what will be going into my 40 in a few months time.

Or even just a rover lt230 transfer case adapted to a different auto.

Much cheaper gearing options, with ~ 3.5:1 STANDARD lowrange (compared with your 1.9:1 you've got now)

cheap, easy to get parts (no worry of destroying $1500 crawler gears).

stronger than the cruiser case.

and a 4 speed auto thrown in as a bonus! and by the time you sell your 350/landcruiser adapter plate, you'll wind up cheaper than just buying a set of crawler gears for the case you have now...

Couple of comparision pics from when I picked mine up. (Mine came out of 86 Rangie). Probably need a rover guy to help with what exact models, but I believe they were still coming out in discoverys and defenders up till about 95. Mine has a 1.2 underdrive for high range too, which I think most older models have.

Some pics for you to get a feel for the size...I can grab some measurements for you if needed.

so they are both rover units which you are using the auto off one and the tcase off the other, is that right?

is the auto electonic?

thanks Darren

A440F and split transfer are Toyota, to compare the size of the Rover boxes against the Toyota.

Sorry, should have wrote toyota in front of the a440f bit (will edit my post). As Simon said the A440f and split transfer case came out of the FJ73 Landcruiser that I parted out, but the same auto is found in most auto toyota landcruisers.

I will be using the whole package that came out of the rangie, the zf auto and lt230 transfer case.

still struggling with rover :bad-words:

Seems Twisty you are a little further into the same questions i am asking

I have read the link to your thread thanks for the link ray185. It sounds like all the bits you would buy and all the mucking around to make it all work would be similar cost to sticking to all toyota and just adding tranny gears.

Its all bang for buck

If you speed 2g putting an auto in against 2g putting tranny gears in which is going to make the car more capable.

I am leaning towards fitting the 5 speed i have here and buying tranny gears atm. Havings said that i would rather an auto

Is there an overdriven auto that will bolt straight to my chev that is not electronicly?

I wonder if the toyota auto you have Twisty will bolt to the adaptor my 60 4 speed is boted to atm? I might be interested in it or one like it with tranny gears.

thanks all for your input

Dose any one know where i could get a twin t-case kit for 60 series t-cases? I know you can buy these for hilux's.

this would give me gear reduction and a longer front tailshaft as well?

a divorced t-case has been sugested as well has any one seen anyone do this with success other than a suzuki or using a 720 t-case?

cheers Daz

mmm, was a easy choice for me in the end, as the ZF and LT230 only cost me $150, and was out of a mates old truck, so knew the condition of it too.

Auto to bolt up to your 350 would be the TH400 "i think"....maybe match it to a LT230 xfer? The marks kit to mate the TH400 to the LT230 is almost half the price of crawler gears for a cruiser case. Then you get a factory xfer, with factory gears = more reliable/cheaper spares. Also I've heard all the crawler gears for cruiser cases whine pretty bad.

http://www.marks4wd.com/products/engine ... vauto.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Not sure if the A440F would bolt to your current adapter, if it did you would still need some other bits to mate the convertor etc. This is the marks kit I had to mount the A440F to a 304.

chev to c4 bellhousing is avaliable pretty much anywhere

c4's are bullet proof can be built to handle over 1000hp but no overdrive as your asking about

Im guessing i could find one to bolt to my chev

dose the rover t-case have a pto out put? i need it to drive my pto winch.

I think its the rover bit that is killing me but i am considering it now. Ill check out the link ta

Twisty would you mind measuring the distance from the bell housing (where it bolts to the motor) to the flange of the front and rear tailshafts.

Ill find out the adaptor width

thanks Darren

Not sure on the PTO output, from a quick look over mine, I dont think so, but would pay to check with some landrover guys.

ZF Auto is NOT electronic.

ZF/LT230 length approx 980mm. Adapter is just a plate, so I guess lucky to be 25mm.

There is about of info around of divorced lt230s too. I came across one when researching mine, but googling just found this.
LT230 might be another option it can be made divorced:

zf spud shaft & lt230 drive flange, bore the drive flange press over the zf spud an weld together.(should be a tight press fit over the spud)Install bolt and washer to hold the "new shaft " through the lt230 input gear.As long as the intermediate drive shaft has a slip joint installed it will not fail. Mike slade's 110 strech has had one for at least 6 years now.

Here are two views of the LT-230 transfer case as it is installed. The divorced-mounting allows for the weight of the driveline to be placed farther back towards the center of the truck, and also makes it very easy to service the transfer case or transmission should it be needed. The t-case has a 3-point mounting system on custom brackets. The mounts are GM transmission mounts and are identical to the mount we used on the transmission. The intermediate driveshaft uses all Spicer off the shelf parts which made it very inexpensive and easy to get parts for future servicing. This particular LT-230 has also been modified for part-time 4wd. Used in conjunction with the front axle's free-wheeling hubs we expect the front axles and CV joints to last a very long time due to the absence of constant use.

Thanks Twisty big help

Im wondering if a turbo 700 with divorced 230 might work? No adaptors at all and longer front tailshaft. Could turn out very cost efficiant

Ill check out the links you posted ta

According to the rover guys, you can get a PTO output for the lt230... i asked the same question.

Update for those that are interested,

I have looked into, priced and dismissed fitting the A440f landcruiser auto, Turbo 700, turbo 400 and 4L80E autos. A440f and turbo 700 not up to the task unless spend big dollars. Turbo 400 won’t provide a longer front tail shaft or overdrive. 4L80E WAY to expensive

ZF auto and T-case is a constant 4wd and unless I was to trip on one cheap in good condition that has a pto drive for my winch im not going to looking into any more atm. The main advantage I see there is the T-case upgrade and my main motive is for an auto and crawler gears not a T-case upgrade. I am more than happy with the T-case set up I run it has served me well for the last 10 years. All the auto places I have spoken to have steered me away from the rover auto that worries me.

80 or 100 series auto and T-case might be an option but I assume they will be to big to fit into my gearbox tunnel plus they are electronic and no one can tell me if they can be manualized. Plus I have the same issue of finding a PTO drive to suit but I think it would be easier to find than a rover unit.

I am hoping to find/trip on something that will suit on ebay or outers etc, other wise mainly cost motivated I think I am going to fit the 5 speed I have and Tranny gears all up cost approx 2.5g a good strong auto alone is going to cost something like double that by the time its fitted with out tranny gears. A built 4L80E with all the bits needed to fit it came to just under 10g and that did not include the 80 T-case or tranny gears.

Did you look into marlin crawler toybox?
It's a hilux transfer between the gearbox and landcruiser transfer.
Low range 2.28 standard hilux.
Only down side is it may need 2 adapters.
