I find 1st or 2nd low is fine for me. And not that it makes any difference if going up or down or driving along on the flat. But I find 1coffee and 2 sugars with milk to be a nice coffee.
So what type of 4wding do you want a ratio for?
You need more info.
Are we talking big arse wheels and driving down bloody steep stuff with big rocks. Then maybe think about 85% gears from either of the manufacture.
But if we are talking a tourer with 33" tyres. And just wanting things to go a little slower down hills with out using the breaks then maybe the 43% gears in the transfer will be fine.
So what ya want them for.
Its that or just dont drive up hill. Then you want have to drive down them.

I have never ran any modded ratios. But I think that 85% or 83% would be to low. Might be great for matching wheel speed to winch speed. But to slow to be usfull anywhere else.
43% gears would allow low range to be useful over than winching. But still be a closure match to a hi-mount without excess wheel speed.

Pffft!!! sorry but your wrong!
putting my 85% reduction in my shorty was the best mod i have done, better then the air lockers.
if you are driving up and down steep hills actually if you are driving off road at all, 85% isw the way to go. you have so much more control.

How fast can you go in low range?

if you are in low range why do you want to go fast? you want max torque delivered to the wheels, you don't want max speed.
but i have and auto and in low range and drive i can do 40 45kph if need be.

Because its a winch challenge type set up and going slow for five metres and drive fast for 2km. Even 45km/h on the limiter may be to long.
I found when I was driving the same stages for winch comps. That first gear low was only a fraction to fast. But the rest of the low range ratios where fine.
