hi just wondering if it would be cheaper to source the parts individually for my turbo setup or if i should just pay someone like axt in dandenong to do it.. i want to use a t3/t4 garret turbo preferably with a highmount manifold and a 3 inch dump pipe and staight through exaust.. can you please give me your opinion on what to do? like how difficult and expensive? where to get piping done etc etc.. my trucks done 398,000 ks still going strong, its a 1990 GQ with the silvertop motor, should i be weary bout a diy job due to this? and does anyone no where to get a new headlining done?
any input would be appreciated..
cheers

Well work out what you can do yourself, then price individual parts and you would have your answer? Engine condition wont come into it unless you intend on having someone rebuild it while putting a turbo on it. Boost is boost mate it will kill it whoever bolts it on.

4500 for all of that is a bargain if your no good on the tools. What is the rest of your rig like. I would spend that on lockers and a winch before i worried about a turbo if you don't already have those.

T3/T4 turbo on a TD42? What are the specs?
(don't see too many using a T3, let alone a T3/T4)

yeh im not too bad on tools and my mates a 4th year apprentice deisel mechanic.. but what components do i need to buy, manifold, turbo, dump pipe, oil lines, what else? and to get the piping done at an exhaust joint would it cost much? and do i just use the round air filter near the gaurd then straight to turbo?

yeh turbo and manifold main things oil and water lines are easy just use enzed or pirtek i used a mob called hose corp did every thing for cash was real cheap, yeh i got some stainless from the exhaust joint some bends they had left over pretty cheap but i know the owners. i think you can use the pre filter but with a different filter not sure i put a diff air box in mine.

I've turboed mine "on the cheap" and after it was finished (3" dump+exhaust, pyro, boost gauge, silicon bends, airbox, gaskets, hoses bla bla) it still cost me 3grand! That was all second hand (most of the "big" items) and on the cheap, all fitted myself.
It's all the small bits that add up! The turbo kit itself cost me $1500 but all the other bits killed it!
It can be done cheaper, but you need a lot of patience to wait for the right parts at the right time to come up..........

yeh i think im gonna try a custom setup with maybe a zd30 airbox? then stainless piping and silicone bends to turbo.. i got quoted 100 bucks for the crossover pipe at an exhaust joint and 480 for a 3 inch straight through exhaust, i just need to buy a manifold and turbo.. maybe go the T3 or T3/T4 but i want to use a highmount manifold, will this work? and how hard are the oil lines to run?

Got my turboglyde kit from 4x4 Systems via post to WA. No probs bolting it on. Offered a carton to a local trusted (small) mechanic to advise me when I came up against any problems. Got it tuned professionally. It has been running sweet for over 2 years now. Saved nearly $1000 doing it myself.

I think your car
may fall into a slightly different category there.
I'm not having a dig at the OP, I'm just saying that i haven't/hadn't heard of anyone running a T3/T4 on a TD42 before.

I beg to differ.
Mine is a T3/T4 hybrid.
They are more common than you would think. Especially with a 3" exhaust system.

gudday
sound like your trying to go for a modest improvement with out spending a fortune?
the turbo mentioned above (TO4 series) will work BUT to get the most out of it you'll need pump mods, and if you start down that road its gunna need a shit load of other stuff to justify the cash.
go the garret 28 series or something similar in size (T3's good) spend the time reading through the builds in here most guys have used these......and there is nothing to worry about with the install - its a piece of piss when following the info provided off this site alone.
...just my 2c's......
good luck
