Guys,

I've see on the web that some people have done this as a cheaper alternative for engine replacement than getting a pajero motor. Some say that the compression ratio between the pajero motor and magna are different and thus will lose low down torque. If this is so, is it much?

Also do the 3.0L V6 from later 90's magna's suit ?

I used a 3.5 magna motor (swaping 3.5 paj motor) No noticeable loss in low end grunt, noticeable gain in the top end though .. the fact the motor is 190,000 ks younger may not have hurt either.

If the motor is a 6g72 then yes it should be fine.

I did it with a 3.5 about 4 months ago, you needed to swap sump, oil pickup, oil pump, rocker covers, cam sprockets, harmonic balancer, intake (all) water pump ( you would use a new one) and fab up a bracket to hold the sensor for the ignition (the magna has a distributer, the paj is ignition pack) and trim off some excess casting (cant put the cam belt covers back on, it gets in the way)

So basically you strip it back to a long motor, and swap all the bit .. bolt it back in as the blocks and heads apart from minor cosmetics are the same thing.

Thanks for that - and excuse my lack of knowledge/ignorance, as I am in no way a mechanic (basically know enough to get myself out of trouble - or into trouble ) but what I am gathering from what you've said is that in essence, they are exactly the same block, and there is no problem that its a East/West motor?? Basically strip the Magna motor back to bare engine, rip the Paj engine out, put the Magna motor in and start attaching everything??

I am not sure on exactly which motors came all of the V6 Magnas. But some 6G72s (3L V6) are twin cam 12 valve like most NH/NJ pajeros. But most 3L V6 magnas I have seen are still a 6G72 but are twin cam 24 valve, so they will not easily convert to a pajero. The 3.5 6G74 motor is what love mud is talking about and are the same twin cam 24 valve long motor in 3.5 Pajeros and 3.5 Magnas. But don't forget some NJ/NK pajeros are 6G74 quad cam 24 valve motors so again I believe magnas do not come with that motor (correct me if I am wrong).

The first 3L V6 Pajero (NG) will fit straight into a NH/NJ pajero you just basically have to swap the motor wiring harness, distributor and some other small fittings. So you may pick up a early pajero V6 cheap. So be careful if you are wanting to do a 6G72 or 6G74 magna/pajero swap as there is quite a few different 6G72 and 6G74 motor combinations.
