Rodeo 99 Alternator change :-(

On the weekend I discovered my alternator was on the fritz so I rang my local auto store and they recommended that I buy a new one for $350. I drove to Morayfield and bought the new alternator and arranged to have my mechanic changeover the alternator the next day. He said the job would be an easy one and would take about an hour. Well when we got the alternator out - this is when the fun started - the connector on the alternator was different. We rang around and checked that we could use the alternator with a new connector and luckily we could. Once installed the new alternator ran ok or at least we thought it did. we grabbed a multimeter and tested the output at rest and under load. At rest the voltage was fine but under load the alternator was charging 17.5 voltss. The new alternator was faulty! Has anyone else gone through the same issues with remanufactured parts? This lack of quality makes simple repairs frustrating.
