tray swap gu

hey all
i am changing my shitty alloy tray on my gu leaf spring ute to a nice white t l engineering steel tray that i picked up off a mate cheap. Now the issue im having is my mates old man has cut the original mounts off from underneath the tray itself and from what i can see is not just a matter of welding some c channel back to the tray and bolting it to my chassis . for my sub fuel tank sticks up higher then the front to mounts do.
If you have got a steel tray can you let me know how yours is mounted to miss the sub fuel tank cheers heaps...
