G'day guys, looking at a car for the missus, choice between the Grand Chereokee and the Rangie Sport (supercharged V8).

All i'm using it for is towing (my gq wagon), and running up the beach (camping).

Looking around 75 k to spend. Any info would be great like do they tow well at capacity, lockers avail, do they 4b (properly), can you fit a dual battery?

Wanted to get an auto but if they're s-house i can settle for a man.

Again any info would be great.

You are unlikely to get a 09 Supercharged Range Rover Sport less than $100K - closer to $150K. Diff locks cannot be fitted - unless the rear e-locker was ordered when bought new. They have a top traction control system that almost negates the need for lockers. They are exceptionally capable off road without mods. Do a search on Youtube.

They have a 3.5 tonne towing capacity.

As Garry has said very capable. Based on the D3/D4 platform, but with slightly less rear overhang.

Ediff is a rear locker and was an option.

You will be looking at around 05 / 06 for that money looking at carsales.

I would have said it was a very different car to the Jeep.

as said u'd be hard pushed to find the supercharged 8 for that money, they were the top of the line, u will find TDV6's which are good and can be chipped, or if u look around u'll find a high k's TTV8 diesel, my old man has one...they hammer.

u'll probably find more aftermarket gear for the grand, i have a mate that sells shiat for them over here, but out of the box will come no where near the sport offroad.

All Range Rover sports are Automatic's

I would try and buy a 2007 model on, they had worked out the bugs by then.

I would also consider the TDV6 (then you could chip it) as a very good tow vehicle. You'll be sprised how good they go. The Supersharged V8 would be too pricey to purshase unless it had high kms. N/A one would be in that price range.

If the budget stretches the TDV8 is the pick of them all.

As for off road ability, with the Terrain response system and Air bag suspension these things go goodwith and without the rear e-Locker.

Yes you can fit duel batteries relatively easily.

Cheers for the info boys - got a supercharged V8 with e-locker (i'm assumong it has it as the screen for 4x4 info locks when 4wding.) some problems with it as prevoiusly posted but was wondering about th dual battery system... Cant find anywhere to put it but the boot or a 9 volt taped in the engine bay. Cheers.

You can fit a second battery in the box on the drivers side with the ABS module and brake master cylinder, You can only fit a small battery in size but there are plenty of high output small batteries available these days. most ARB's and TJM places should be able to fit it. You can even ask your local Land Rover Dealer as they sometimes fit them or can organise for someone to fit it.

If there is a picture of 2 padlocks on the screen (one where the transfer case is and one where the rear diff is), then there is a E-locker fitted. If there is only one padlock on the screen, then that is only the transfercase and no E-locker

He does kits specially for the Rangie Sport, D3 and D4.

I have an SC80 which I cant fault but he is also working on a new 160amp kit at the moment if you want a bigger current rating. Check out the vendors section on AULRO if you want to know more about that 160Amp jobbie.

You can also fit a smaller physical sized battery such as an optima in the space just in front of the starter battery.

I was at the local branch of the Battery Factory on another matter and I asked about deep cycle batteries for the RRS. The issue is the physical size of most decent sized Ah batteries. Optimas fit but have low Ahs and are expensive at around $400. 60ah Allrounder batteries will fit in the ABS box as well as the space infront of the starter battery. Also they cost $198 so the two works out the same price as the Optima but will give a total of 120Ah. These seem a good cost effective option and can be used as starter batteries if required for moderate loads.
