Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Alrighty,

The basic idea:
70series (Bundera) cab on an 80series chassis. 1HZ out of the 80, and a tray.

The stupid questions I'm expecting:
Why not just buy an 80 and cut it? - Because it's been done a million times before
Why not buy a ute? - Because I don't want to.
I want to do something different.

So basically, I would be extremely suprised if it bolted straight up however i'd like to know what I'm likely to be in for.
Will a 75series front end bolt up to a 70? Thinking room in engine bay for 1HZ
Will a 1HZ fit into the bundys engine bay with out serious f*cking about?
Are a 70series and 75series body mounts in the same place (having seen 75's on 80 chassis this would make it easier to look into what I have to move.)

Chances are if I do this I will be doing it in the garage at home and wont have room for a cab to be sitting around for months. So I plan to get the chassis, do what I want to it and the running gear, then get a body and have the body on in reasonably good time.

All help appreciated.

A 75 series front will bolt up to the 70 body.
The engine bay in the bundera is shorter than a 75, so the 1HZ would be a better fit with the 75 series front on.
The 75 series rear mounts are in a different place to the bundy's.
I found an image for the 80 Chassis but cant find the one i have for the 70's.

Are you suggesting the front mounts are in the same place? Or you are unsure but know that the rear are different?

havin done this... its not as simple as some people seem to think

if i was to do it again i think using the 75 chassis is an easier option... first speak with your engineer if your looking for road rego

custom made mounts , ive used 75 chassis ones grafted onto the 80 chassis

ill post some pics up oneday

i think the only thing left standard was the gearbox crossmember and front link mounting points and steer box location

The 75chassis was the original plan, but I want coils. So I started looking at 80 chassis

I'd love to see photos of mounts of these 7# / 8# creations both new and old mounts if anyone has some or knows of some on here.

Toyota Repair Manual for Body and Chassis

You can buy them from spare parts at a dealer.

Some can be downloaded on the net, if someone has scanned in a particular manual and uploaded it.

They make them specifically for different models and model date ranges.

They contain a whole lot of service information and steps, along with the chassis dimension diagrams.

Don't expect them to have them in stock, they would probably have to order them in.

If you want them in a couple of days, give them a call now, to check what is required for the model(s) you are interested in, when they can get them in, and how much they will cost.

They can add up to a fair amount if you get everything to cover a particular model, Repair Manual for Body and Chassis, Engine Repair Manual, Electrical Wiring Diagram manual, and any possible supplement manuals for for those if your model has had updates since the original version of the manual.

For example, with my 78 series, I have to have the 3 manuals for the 75 series, plus an extra 3 manuals to cover the changes from the 75 to the 78 series.

I bought mine online for 10 bucks from manuals online. I think It was listed on ebay when I got it.

Is the reason you are using a bundera body because you already have one? because if not the bj73 front ends are the same as a 75, so one of them bodies would be easier to work with from the get go,

and from what i found out with mine when it was built is that, everything attached to the chasis is from the 80 series, so manual and 1hz.
And then the steering column has to be modified to mate with the 75 steering side of things,

isnt the bundy body shorter i the rear than the 73 as well?

so why a bundy body are you planning on having a tray behind it???
or shortening 80 chassis
the bundy wheel base is too short in my book unless you like doing wheel stands for no reason and toppling end over end

Yeah bundys are shorter so that way I'd get a bigger tray. I don't have anything for this project yet.

The idea came about when...

We'd had a few beers while workin on our trucks and we started looking at rust in the back of my poor old troopy and toyed with the idea of cutting it into a ute. But I'd want that little bit of extra room in the cab. So we'll cut it into an extra cab. But that's a lot of fucking around and there's a few of them around already. Alright I'll cut it at the C pillar. But then you'll pretty much have a bundy. Okay, I'll use a bundy. Then why put it on the old leaf sprung troopy chassis. Put it on an 80! And there we have it.

I've always like the look of middys (73) but would be concerned at the finish size of the tray and adds alot of space behind the back seat that is alot harder to use.

I basically want to get an 80 with a stuffed body/motor or both.
Piss the body off.
Rebuild motor to turbo spec, add turbo
rebuild gearbox
rebuild transfer with reductions
rebuild diffs, with lockers
add lift,
add bundera body
add tray and canvas canopy
road legal.

Not sure how i'll seal up the back door just yet, I guess i'll just see when I've got it infront of me. Wheel arches will be closed up into tool boxes.

It'll take a few hours. I'm not a rich man so I'll do bits as I can afford to, and still have the troopy to enjoy until she's built. Pretty much the only thing I haven't rebuilt on the poop carrier is the gearbox and that'll be happening soon so I'm confident I can handle the mechics side of it and will complete a welding course next year. If I don't trust my welding I know plenty of people whose welding I do trust. But this is my truck not theirs

Was in Toyota and the bloke said he can't get the manuals for body mounts in the models I'm after anymore so I'll keep looking.
Yotabits. Nice work mate. Is it something you would do again or an absolute sh!tfight don'twannaknowaboutit thing? I won't be going to the extremes you have though. (I say that now...)

I would not worry about the mounts that toyota made for either of them the bundy is not going to bolt on the 80 series ones
what you need to do is temp fit the body where you need it then fab up some mounts as even if the originals bolt up are they in the right place they may be too high or low

they way i did mine is just sat the body on stands over the chassis and fabbed mounts to look factory
you need to get the engine in the right place and the wheels in the right place so custom mounts are just about a certainty

mine went together in a similar way. motor went in first and body position was from that. mine does use 75 cab mounts but it was some work to get them to fit

having a forklift was almost essential the amoutn of times its been on and off
