rover motor?

Post by pricey bandit »

I've got a hilux with a rover moter. I'm wondering about the engine i've been told it's a 4.4 block with 3.5 heads, because the engine number starts with 44 and it has landrover on the tappet covers. Does this sound right?? Can't say i've delt with that many rover motors so any input would be of help!

If it is 4.4 litre is is most likely a Leyland P76 engine with Rover Heads on it. Though (unlikely) it could also be a Rover 3.5 that has been stroked.

Now this may be complicated.
Have a look at the inlet manifold and carby/s. Is it an email carby 2 barrel on an inlet manifold that has not been cut and shut and no spacers between the manifold and heads?
If yes, it is p76 block.
If no and has 2xstromberg CD175s then look for spacers between the manifold and heads.
If YES then is P76 block
If no then is Rover block.
The engine number on a Rover is on the LH side of the block between 2 and 3 cylinders while the engine number for a P76 is on the back of the block above the flywheel AFAIR>

Engine number starting with 44 on the LH bank at the rear base of the head is a P76/terrier 4.4 block as Philip mentioned, carby should be a WW stromberg if factory leyland or rover twins with manifold spacers. It is common to swap the timing cover and waterpump for rover so this might not be a good form of identification- a couple of photo's would be best.
Saddle up tonto, its the not so loanrangie! . 98 TDI DISCO lightly modded with more to come.

Thanks guys. the engine number is at the rear as mentioned, so 4.4 block i'd think. As for the carby it is running a holley carb with spacer plate.
