1HZ Turbo charging.

Hey guys, Looking at bolting a turbo charger onto my new toy, I have been told a turbo like a TD04 or TD05 off a WRX is a perfect size... Can anyone confirm.. I just want to create a few extra ponies at the treads, pros and cons, additional info that may be needed... any advice will be highly regarded and greatly appreciated.

Cheers Rob

gt 2860r , gt2871r , gt2871r all in the .64 turbine size
all these will work for you. if you use one of these 3 turbos you will need to get the front half of the 1hdt manifold about 300 from toyota and the you will need a ct 26 to gt 28 turbo adaptor (source from matt mcinnes on here)
i think he is also doing a turbo adaptor from the standard manifold check with him. you will also find that you will need to mod the wastegate actuator bracket and arm so it doesnt hit the block.

but best bet is do a search on here and you will find most of your answers.

Goes ok ;)

Starts page 9 and goes for some time.

Will a factory WRX turbo be good enough for basic turbo setup on my 1HZ? they are a TD04 or TD05, ill get some specs on them in a sec.

The 1HZ DTS turbo kit uses a Mitsubishi TD05.

Not sure if the specs on it are exactly the same as the WRX TD05.

I use a bit of a hybrid, it's a GT32 housing size from precision turbo, it has a T3 pattern, works great, take a look at any of my videos to see it in action:

It depends on what you want and how you're going to use it.. Get all these guys to list the rpm needed to make 10psi boost steady (like up a hill) and you'll get an idea of how they go. Under accelleration you can richen up the mix to make it spool up early, but holding it at a steady 10psi shows exactly what the story is.

For usable low down torque you're looking at T25-T28 sized turbos, I'm not familiar with the WRX TD05, but it's in the right size range.

Way down south, about an hour from Qtown.
Keep your eyes peeled on trademe, no end of ricers upgrading and selling off perfectly good turbos for a song.

AFAIK TD04 too small, TD05 should be fine, you will want TD05-16g (thats what they use in the DTS kits on ebay..), I was looking at this then found an adaptor from matt that bolts straight to the original ex manifold and fits T25/T28, I have a GT2860rs and all the other bits on the way.. Cant wait to do some sik drift in my 105

So most people are using standard manifolds with Matts adaptor and a GT2860 turbo? Are there any clearance issues with anything?

I was told the waste gate actuator needs to be moved.

Yes it has to be lengthened as it is too tight between the engine block and the turbo.

Thanks ledgend80. What sort of performance differance is there between the .64 and .84 housing?

as been discussed on here before the .64 turbine housing is what you want to go for or it will be to laggy with the .86 housing. for instance my turbo in 4th gear will make 10psi around 2300 rpm but that is with standard pump adjustment and injectors need rebuilding and no intercooler yet.

if you have a dts/white manifold a 2860 or 2871 will fit perfect with no clearence issues and no need to modify the wastegate actuator..... like posts before an 0.86 ar rear is too big/laggy. im already contemplating a 1hd-ft/e conversion with a bb garrett now chasing more power/torque as you do.bb garrett vs td05 boost is instant from idle, reduces smoke/overfuelling down low because of this, i increased fuel to the point i cant go any further and still have lower egts and next to no smoke than td05 with less fuel and also less smoke than my old DX80 with axt T3 style turbo kit.

my engine oil is sooooooo much cleaner for sooooooo much longer now too. it never goes filthy stain your clothes black anymore.

sorry, off topic i know, but what rear springs you running?

nice flex :)

plus it seems to go pretty hard, read in another thread the 'sweet spot' is 1700 to 3100rpm? sounds like a good range for daily driving and 4wding...hows over taking at say 120km/h with the turbo boost all gone?

Hi Maddog, yes it kicks in about 1700-1800, i forget what it boost to as I disconnected the tach a couple of years ago. It pulled hard and had no smoke the way I tuned the fuel without boost comp. I never ran it out of turbo at 120 kms/hr - it still had room left, I could get it to 140 but never went faster. the springs are OME, I made my own anti reversing extended shackle.

thanks for watching!

LOuis

EDIT< I will be changing out the hot section for a smaller ar., so I'll have boost immediately now, I use the truck more for wheeling so I need boost as soon as I tough the throttle. I'm hoping it works well - got everything ceramic coated as well.

This may sound stupid but how do you adjust the wastegate acutator? Do you just loosen the nut and turn the piece behind it?

what do you want to adjust it for?
if you can get your hands in there to do any adjustments you are doing good.
i just adjusted it to the setting i wanted before fitting the turbo to the manifold. and when i want to increase the boost i will fit a boost compensator. by the way that is a 12psi actuator not a 6psi actuator that is supplied standard with the turbo

ok guys, i think its time to turbo my beast, i found out my engine is a 96 1hz but when i ring toyota for a manifold they tell me they dont know what im talking about, what do i ask for exactly when i need it??? 1hz dte fte etc etc without knowing that they cant help me, im awaiting a call from mike vine turbos to get a run down on what i need, also who this bloke that makes the adaptors to fit after market turbos to the factory manifold and how much including post to 4157

If you are going to use a standard Toyota turbo (CT-26), you need the front peice only to suit a 1HD-T from a HDJ80 (year wont matter).

If you are going to use a Garrett or other aftermarket turbo, just get and adapter to suit the manifold that is on there now. The only real difference is the bolt pattern on the outlet flange.

some good adapters are available.

yeah no worries, i spoke to mike vine earlier and discussed it with him, he told me i can use my factory zorst manifold, they make an adaptor inhouse to suit and he said for all the 1hz engines he has done he has used a to3 turbo and he says it makes great low down torque aswell as up high power combined with a 3inch exhaust... so i think that will be the better option for me.

oh he also said the gt2871r is too small for a 1hz engine (he specialises in 4wd turbo applications)
