Aux Fuel Tank - Levelling

my '77 FJ40 has an auxiliary fuel tank under the passenger side seat.
Now it used to level fine but after replacing my facet electric fuel pump to carter black electric pump it now plays up.
I mean it sometimes levels itself but most of the time one of the tank has all the fuel when its running. If I leave it parked for a while then it levels up fine.
I dont have a switch to switch between tanks. The tank has a "T" piece connector on the bottom of the tanks and hoses coming out from them.
I'm just not used to having two separate tanks and this is also my 1st FJ40 cruiser so not really sure why it was working fine before but not now.
I've read a few threads here but most of them are tanks below the rear cab which needs a switch and/or a pump.
I've got a fuel return
Do I need a fuel tank selector ?
Any thoughts and ideas?
Cheers
