Personally, that looks fine. I would be happy with that - if anything you could drop the pinion height a little.
** this is an edit:
Looking at the back side of the teeth i wouldn't touch the pinion height - on the back of the teeth i would say, if anything, to lift the pinion height. looks like you have set it up about as good as you can.
Cheers, D.

Just a questions about setting the pinion depth... is it as simple as just using some shims to adjust it? bit of a noob with diffs but will be doing mine later this year

Pretty much. It can be hassle having to pull the bearing off and putting it back on when changing the shim pack but other than that it's straight forward enough.
A puller set and hydraulic press help tremendously!

looks pretty good if that is the rear diff of your lux if its the front you should probly be checking the pattern on the other side of the crown wheel.
A little gay rime i learnt at tafe that stuck with me is, Face and flank move the crank (pinion)toe and heel move the wheel (crownwheel). works every time as you cant change one without the other if your back lash is correct which it more important than pattern anyway.

Yep, definately the rear.
Pulling the diff down, and pressing out the pinion takes minutes if you have the right tools.
i bought a cheap Shop press ($100) and it is wonderful! only takes a couple seconds to press the pinion out, and slightly longer to press it back in.
http://www.gearinstalls.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; has given me heaps of pointers, and i have copied a couple of the tools he has made for his installs.
This is also my first toyota Diff rebuild so i just want to make sure i have it all right.
waiting for a in/lb torque wrench to turn up in the mail so i can set the pinion pre load, then its back in the truck and i will start on the front diff.

I had the same trouble.. Looked everywhere, even specialist tool shops couldn't find me one.. Ended up getting a nice dial type in/lb torque wrench on eBay..
gearinstalls.com is a nice resource.. I'm about to install some Nitro gears and ARBs into my 40..

(your weight in kg) * (9.8) * (length of horizontal bar in m) = torque on fitting
Keep hanging off the horizontal bar till the nut stops turning

the Park TW-1 is 0-60 INCH / Lb... for measuring the pinion pre load. not for tightening anything up... LOL.

Would pay to read the thread properly, huh? Most people won't have a torque wrench with high enough rating to do the pinion nut to the nominated range.

So my 0-60in/lb torque wrench turned up this morning, was just sitting on my door step when i went to work this morning.
Pretty damn quick delivery from the USA, got it for a reasonable price too. (glad i didnt fork out to have it express posted, dont think it could have turned up any quicker)
start putting the diff back together and setting the pinion pre load tonight (providing i dont get in trouble for spending too much time in the shed...)
