Im planning a big trip up to the kimberly in a few months time and thinking about buying a fridge.
If you own a 12v fridge which one and are you happy?

Have heard good things about Autofridge but they are the most expensive on the market.

Thanks
Paul.

I have a chescold,I like that it's a three way,240v 12v and gas.
So when you're camped you run it on gas and save the vehicle battery. 8)

I'd go for the Engel. I've got a hand-me-done from my parents which is around 13 years old. In this time, we have not had one problem with it. It keeps the beer cold, so it does its job!

I have owned a Chesscold (never again )and now I own two Engels 40ltr and 60ltr and would not buy anythig else except a Auto fridge cause they have a gel wall which is more energy efficient than any other fridge

Madshort what did you hate about the chescold?
Ive heard they drain batteries pretty quick running on 12 volt.

So it sounds like engel is the go so far.

The autofridge sounds like its got the goods but I dont know if its worth an extra $400-500 more for the same size fridge.

Oh well keep the opinions coming people :D

My old man has an engel, it would be at least 17 y.o.

I remember we were fishing one time (this one time at band camp) and we had a flat, the sand was to soft to jack off so he used the lid of the engel as a base plate, it went straight back on and worked fine ever since!!

I have a 70ltr SNAPPER fridge/freezer, 50ltr fridge and a 20ltr freezer they are very similar to the Explorer fridge/freezers (which is another brand to look at). Only problem is they are big and bulky, perfect for the back of the ute but do take up alot of room in a wagon. the 70 ltr Snapper costs around $1800. I also have a old 29 ltr Engel for my beer fridge when on extened trips.

I'm heading to the kimberleys in july for 6 weeks leaving from Brisbane might see you up there.

I have a Waeco 45 litre and for the price about $400 cheaper than an Engel its the ducks guts. It draws about the same amp and so far everything has been nice and cold. We have had it in 45?c temps and the drinks were cold. Have used it as a freezer once as well. In the past there was a problem with tying them down but they now have handles so that's not a worry. Also the compressor and fridge system is a Danfoss which is one of the best brands in the world

my mate has an arb fridge (dunno if arb make em or they are just rebadged) and it has worked flawlessly for the last couple of years going on big trips through outback qld, down to vic. it even survived a rollover inside one rig :D . it also gets used fairly often as an extra beer fridge, food fridge etc, so it's gets plentyof use

Yeah they draw a lot of power
Mine was a fridge freezer the only thing good about it was you put it on gas at camp and it would keep the tent warm in winter
On a hot day you would have it cranked that high in 4by it would melt the solder of the back off the ciggy lighter socket
In my opinion there are only 3 fridges worth buying
Engels
Autofridge
and trail blaizer

1st, I have an ARB fridge which is actually an Engle rebadged.
2nd, I live in Central Qld. and the average temp out here is 40deg. my fridge will freeze beer if turned up past 1.5. It also uses bugger all power, wouldn't swap it for the world.
3rd, Mum and dad have only just this week bought a new Engle,it has full stainless outside and inside, 40 lt, a chest freezer style lid(which is great), lcd temp display and it uses bugger all power. They paid $1340 with travel bag, it stayes at 4deg. constant on no. 1

i've got 2 engle 40l and a 70l wacoe. the engle's are great have had them for years, they were hand me downs from the old man. but the wacoe is just as good at keeping cold and uses less power. The best thing about the wacoe is price i brought a 70l for the same price as what a 40l engle would cost.
