Guard cutting....

Ok so the time has come to cut my GQ guards so I can run some 37's and I'm wondering what people have used to actually get a nice neat cut eg angle grinder, jigsaw etc. I have done a quarter chop on my brothers maverick and just used a 5 inch grinder with a 1mm cutting disc which worked well but that was all straight cuts.
any and all ideas appreciated.
Cheers,
Dan.

You could use a plasma cutter if you have one, and the panel is going to be painted after the cutting.
Otherwise one of these will just slice through the panel, and kinks, folds, buckles and curves don't slow them down
Known as: Air Hacksaw, Speed Saw or Body Saw

I used the same as you did for the 1/4 Chop .
5" grinder with 1.6mm thin cutting disc's . good clear line and a steady had and you'll be sweet , I've done 4 this way and never had any trouble .
( should have mentioned , I was re-welding the 20mm return back in so my gaurds have alway's been re sprayed .)
The small punmatic hacksaw's do work really well and dont burn your paint , but their not as fast if you plan to re-spray your gaurds anyway.

Thanks for the replies guys, as much as I would love an air powered hack saw or plasma cutter sadly the budget does not extend that far, so any idea if say a 700w electric saw would do the same job ?

Use a jigsaw with a fine metal blade, it will not hurt the paint .

I think you'll find the plasma will burn the paint. It only operates at about 30,000 degrees.
I did mine with an angle grinder. I'd try to use a fine cutting disk (1mm?)
Here is how I did mine.

This is what I was thinking james but I will be welding a piece back in to the arches so I can attach flares and finally mud flaps

Thanks for the link. I've already got the grinder and 1mm cut-off discs but I'm worried about the (for want of a better word) radiused sections as I'm trying to keep my truck looking reasonably registerable because I'm in QLD.

a quality set of tin snips work amazingly well providing you dont have seams to get through
