Mitsubishi Alternator compatability

G'day all, my 1990 Pajero turbo diesel intercooled (4D56) desperately needs a new alternator. Last year in about september, I had it rebuilt for about $270, and since then it has failed about 3 times so I am ready to throw this alternator in the bin and replace it with a new one. I am driving to WA next month, so my car has to be perfect.

I've been looking for alternators and found some on e-bay,
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll ... K:MEWAX:IT" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
but these ones are from a Mitsubishi 4D65 amd 4D68 engine. The alternators range from 90amps to 110amps (my current one is 75amps). They also have the vaccum pump at the back of it like mine does. Will the 4D65 alternator fit my 4D56?
The 4D65 and 4D68 engines were 1.8 litre turbo diesel and used in cars like the Mitsubishi Lancer, around the same era as my 1990 Pajero. I am unsure if this engine was ever used in Australia. Any advice would be much apprieciated as I am running out of time in preparing my vehicle for my trip to outback WA.

I am not an auto electrician, but since no 'Expert' has replied, I suggest that you contact the EBAY seller and ask him to measure the mounting bracket hole diameters and spacings and then compare those dimensions with yours. Also the vacuum connections. Even ask the seller for a photo. The amperage rating should have no major influence on your Paj, other than the fusible link (if fitted) between the alternator abd the battery. If there is one you may have to uprate it to take the higher output from the alternator. (I doubt you will have to change it). From here and without seeing the items, I would expect that they are interchangeable.

Since the ebay one isn't cheap anyway, maybe try these guys: http://www.pinpoint.aea.com.au/Guest_pc ... Alternator" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

(a) they might tell you what else it fits and (b) they might cost about the same. WHile I would expect them to be roughly interchangeable I would also expect the ebay seller to say if it fits your motor.

If you can get the alternator to fit physically with the belt turning it then that is basically the job done, the wiring side is not hard.

Even though some alts can be swapped in you must ensure the drive belt pulley is perfectly in line with the other pulleys.

Have you looked for a cause for the alternator failures? The fact that you have effectively had four failures in a relatively short period of time suggests that it may not be the alternators fault.

Examine the wiring loom closely for chafing near exposed metal, firewall, and entrance to sealed pillars (potential temporary short cct).
