don't worry about blowing up the 4.2 on gas. it was a forklift engine for years before datsun ever put it into a truck. a little bit of care when filling the radiator to cycle all the air out of the water ports in the head is all that is needed.
LPG is cheaper to run than diesel, i don't care what anyone says. a good turboed diesel is a much, much nicer, more torquey car for road use though. but if you want to start wheeling hard shit, where you need instant throttle response and sudden wheelspeed LPG is the way to go.

Hear Hear
Also look at what sort of wheeling you'll be doing, diesel is easy to get all over australia, probably easier to re-sell the car also esp the td42

$8 per 100km around town, down to nearly $6 per 100km on the highway, you can have your diesel.
add to this that diesel engines are absolutely hopeless on the terrain we are driving in my neck of the woods (rocks), and that is why i dislike them.
unless you have a well set up turbo on them, they can't get up the wheelspeed quick enough to fling that vctorian mud that he wants to drive...
Some of the turbo ones are fawkin awesome but!!

Yea I'm not disagreein that gas is cheap, I run it! The 383 costs around $10 per 100k, pretty good in my eyes, similar to my non turbo diesel, and a shiteload more grunt for what wendle says....
But I asked the question as I was unsure what the man wanted to use his fourby for?
Diesel - more initial cost but probably easier to sell, less power unless turboed then more money again, outback fuel availability and range.
Petrol/gas - Cheaper to buy, lots of power, good for sticky mud holes, but not as good remote fuel availability (bugger all gas in towns in the middle of nowhere and petrol won't get the same range)
So yea, I'd go the petrol with gas, it'd be fine for what you want, unless money is no object then it'd be a td42 with aftermarket turbo, intercooler e.t.c., quite a few dollars more though.

Not only is there a saving with LPG but .......
The cost of rebuilding a diesel .....
!!!!!
i recon I can rebuild four 350 chevs for the cost of one diesel motor..... I can also buy a brand new 350 for the cost of a diesel rebuild.
Sure you save a few cents here n there on diesel but when that motor does poopsies ....... vas ya self up really well for the rebuild quote.

800 to a 1000 depending if your running 2 gas tanks and how big your fuel tank is.Bigger fuel tanks and 2 gasies 1500.make sure you fit an upper lube kit. Will give you more power smother running and longer engine life.CHEERS.

it varys from car to car dude. the stocker i am driving around now, has 340,000 on it, nearly all on gas, was written off for flood damage 10 years ago, repaired, and used to tow around a trailer full of dirt bikes for the rest of it's time, and it still runs beautiful. then you hear of other people stripping them down and rebuilding them at 250,000... all in all they are pretty solid trucks though, and you would be very unlucky to pick up a lemon...

Hey fish_man,
i picked up u-beaut 116,000 km RB30 with factory Turbo package runs on Petrol, it's a bit thristy, thats Nissan... it runs beautifully...
when i was shopping for one 6 months ago, most of 'em are around 200k mark and expect to pay around 10-15g's for one, i was lucky to pick this very clean, one 80 y.o. owner unit... after couple of test drives i loved the turbo power...
after i bought it, one of stupidest thing i've ever done, i didn't shopping around for insurance... 17 y.o. Male, 1990 Patrol 3.0 Petrol = $1,800 comphersive insurance from RACV!
Cheers
