Just wondering if anyone has attempted this before, or has any knowledge on the topic.

Have and old middy that is rusting to the shit but has bloody reliABLE 3B diesel in it still running fine. have a hilux with no engine. thought to save myself money (that i dont have 1st year apprentice) i want to transfer the engine gearbox+transfer from the middy over to the hilux.

The hilux isn't registered so i would have to get it over the pits with it in it. does anyone have any ideas on the engineering legalities of this. i figured with not a hell of a lot of power or weight difference over the 5L i might be sweet but wanted to know if anyone had any ideas about this.

Cheers!

no experience personally but i think its got more to do with whether its safe. Meaning has it been done well and the engine isnt going to fall out.

Have you measured the engine and box as well. You will need a hell of alot of modification i beleive to fit a cruiser box and engine including widening gearbox tunnel and lengthening front end. Easier and CHEAPER to just get another hilux engine then throw the cruiser diffs under.

Or buy new panels for cruiser they're fairly cheap

The engine/box combo is really too big and heavy for a hiliux - and the transfer case output is offset in cruiser, centered in hilux. If you're desperate, you'd be better off working out how to put the hilux body on the cruiser chassis - that way you get a stronger chassis, better steering setup, stronger diffs, bigger brakes (?) and full floating rear axle.

Whatever you do, it will have to be approved by an engineer.
