superior sell spacers for your shock towers

How much uptravel do you have with shocks fitted?

I raised mine 50mm with no body lift, I bought a second set from the wreckers and then cut 1 set in half and the other set was cut also but 50mm longer. After its welded back to gether it looks stock again.

At full compression, the distance between front shock mounts is about 350mm. So if the shocks that you're buying are longer than that when compressed, then yes, you'll need to raise your top mount or lower your bottom mount.

For the sake of you're new shocks, and to make the most of their extra length, this should be done properly with a tape,, not dodgely with you're eye.

Find out the compressed length of the shock and then work out the distance between you're shock mounts at full bump,, the discrepency will be the amount you'll have to modify your mounts.

You can also lengthen your bump stops depending on how much up travel you want. Rule of thumb "usually" you want 1/3 of the shocks travel for up and 2/3 for down. So for 300mm travel shocks you'll have 100mm of piston rod showing when you truck is on level ground.

Hi guys, i have been thinking about doing this also. i have a 5in superflex kit from superior engineering and now looking for a little more from the front. I bought the shock mount spacer kit from them aswell but i decided to measure a few things before i fit them.I found that with the patrol on the hoist, both shocks removed, with one side fully compressed with atransmission jack, the arms/bushes bind up 15mm after the shock would have ran out of up stroke and the fully extended side bound up 10mm after the shock would have ran out of down stroke. So i guess this is ideal BUT is there any point to fitting my tower spacers now or am i missing something??

What you're missing is longer shocks and a superflex arm. With you're current setup there is no need to lift the shock mount.

Got superflex arms in both sides at the moment, i dont think going higher will help me either as its actuly the superflex arms twisting on the bush and hitting the diff housing, so cant see longer shocks helping untill i find clearance for the arm/bush flex.

If your suspension cycles without bottoming the shock out, there is no need to fit them.

If you want new shocks, measure the open and closed lengths you would need with and without the spacers and get a shock to suit. Shocks wont be exactly the measurements you need, so may be better off with the spacers. And then extend your bumpstops to suit where needed.

Hi Mate,

I have Superflex Front Arms in my GQ with extra long front shocks, I also installed 2inch shock tower extensions as they were needed in order to stop them from bottoming out.

Cheers,
Daniel

Be carefull if your getting to much uptravel, with big tires (37's). I bought a set of superflex arms from offroad boss, had to lower the bumpstops to stop the tire tucking up and touching the steering box. Even if it clears with smaller tires, my opinion is with too much tuck you just end up draging your under body on obstacles. Since droping the bumstops i think the cars become more capable.

superflex arm with 5" medium rate coils, 8" tough dogs, 45mm shock tower spacers.

perfect setup!
works for me anyway :D

Hey mate, i'd just be careful with that setup.

To get 8' toughdogs to fit without bottoming out you would need to raise your mounts about 140mm, or do a combo of raising the shock mounts and spacing down your bumpstops.

Here are some figures:

Distance between front shock mounts @ full bump = 340mm

Length of 8' TD front shock @ full bump = 456mm, add bush's = 486mm

So that means that the toughdog 8' front shock is 146mm too long to fit in the stock Nissan mounts @ full compression.

146mm too long, and you've only allowed for 45mm with your 45mm shock mount spacers, so the shocks are still 100mm too long for the mounts.

You could probably get away with that setup if you are just flexing up slowly crawling, but if you start doing jumps and the like then you'll probably mash those shocks

cheers Jason

cheers for the concern bud, but I think I'll be right.
Superior eng. recommend 50mm spacing with this exact setup, and when I did real testing before buying suitable shocks, by flexing through whole suspension cycle I found that my truck dosen't even come close to that full bump dimension of 340mm you posted. maybe if I jumped it like you said, but that ain't happenin! the coils near on close up before it reaches bumpstops! my suspension cycle concentrated more on big down travel, maybe my coils too stiff? trucks too light? whatever the case my 45mm spacing suits my truck. I'll keep an eye on it and if it starts to come close as the coils age and sag I'll be keen to fit some airbumps to the setup.

pointless spacing the shock mounts at 146mm, that will lose all that is gained by fitting longer shocks, may aswell run 5"shocks.
