What's the difference between a high and low mount winch?

Low-mounts - gear box and motor on the side. Come in pretty much any rating you want.

High-mount - Motor is above the drum, has gearbox etc down the side, usually hold more cable than a low mount. Comes in any load rating you want as long as it is 8000lb's.

So pretty much most bullbars would be low mount?

Yeah, but bars can be easily modded to suit a hi mount. Also a high mount has a quicker in when not under load due to the g/box design, its easily repaired, holds more cable (already stated) so is popular in the comp circuit. A high mount would be my choice if you can mount it.

high mounts are still alot quiker under load as well arn't they. all the ones i have seen in action have been.
another point high mounts dont get as hot so they are more suited to using plasma ropes etc.

Agree with all said although the warn 9.5xp low mount is getting pretty close in the speed stakes
