chunk of cast steel out my gearbox when changing oil

hey guys, got a question for those with knowledge of such things.
i dropped my gearbox oil on the weekend as i decided it was due a change and with a kakadu trip coming up thought it would be nice to have some nice oil in there for the prolonged heat it will cop.
so pull the plug out and out pops this with the drain plug.
the hi temp red that appears to be on it has nothing to do with me, it came out like that.
its cast steel, dome shaped, definately broken and has a little hollow inside on the broken side, as the pictures show.
the gearbox works fine, sounds fine and tastes fine.
shift quality was fairly shit going into first or second with the penrite oil, even after adding the suggested expensive additive.
now with castrol vmx 80 its like a new set of synchros have been put in there, shift quality is much better now.
there was quite a bit of metal fuzz on the magnetic plug when it came out, but there was the 2 times before that too, dunno what that means, maybe the shitty penrite oil.
so does anyone have any ideas where this may have come from and what it is that at some point in time is going to become a headache for me?
if i didnt know better i would say it was part of the housing from looking at the casting quality, but really i dont know.
cheers, andy
