Fuel Issue?

Lately (last 6 months) i've noticed my fuel enconomy slowly geting worse and worse, and havent been able to figure out why, then the other day sitting at the traffic lights it was idleing perticularly high can't tell you how high as it has no tacho but about twice as high as normal, then at the next set of lights it was still doing it then the next it was back to normal. I have taken a notice the last week or so and its doing it about 3 out 5 times. It's on a 92 triton 2.6
Any thoughts on what could be causing this?
I thought maybe the automatic choke could be sticking or something, would explain why the fuel econ is bad, if its stuck on when im crusing down the high way/around town ect...
Any other ideas? Is there any reason why i couldnt delete the auto choke all together (removing the little butterfly thing on the carby (under the air cleaner)) for a few days to see if fixes it?
Cheers Jonezy
